Money Matters

We want you to get the very best from your studies whilst at College. We understand that sometimes a lack of money can stop you from doing this is or make things difficult for you. This leaflet gives you information about the help that is available. You can get more information about anything you read this leaflet from the Guidance Team in Student Services.
 
Access to Learning Fund
This Fund is for HE students who are in severe financial hardship. Other rules apply.
Adult Learning Grant Available to you if you are on a low income, aged 19 or over, a full time student and studying for your fi rst full Level 2 or 3 qualification. If you are eligible you could get an allowance of £10, £20 or £30 a week. Other rules apply.
 
Army Bursary
If you are aged 16 to 32 this could be for you. To be eligible for this Bursary (worth £2000) you have to be a British national, be physically fit, want to join the Army and be studying for a full Level 2 qualification.
 
Books/Uniform/Equipment/Other Course Costs
We have two funds to help students with these costs. They are the Learner Support Fund for students aged 16-18 and the Learner Support Fund for students aged 19+. Both are Means Tested, cash limited and allocated on a first come first served basis.
 
Career Development Loans
If you are aged 18 or over and ordinarily resident in Great Britain you may be eligible for a Career Development Loan. A Career Development Loan is a bank loan which can help you pay for vocational learning or education. The loan can be any amount between £300 and £8000. It can be used to fund any full-time, part-time or distance learning course as long as it is vocational and lasts no longer than two years, plus up to one year’s practical experience if this is part of the course. You will not need to repay the loan until after you finish your learning.
 
Education Maintenance Allowance
Available to you if your parents are on a low income, you are aged 16 to 18 and your course is at least 12 hours class time every week. If you are eligible you could get £10, £20 or £30 a week depending on your family income. You may also get two Bonus payments worth £100 each if you make good progress with your studies. Other rules apply.
 
Education Maintenance Bursary
Available to you if you have been refused EMA but your parents are on a low income. A termly allowance is paid. Other rules apply.
 
Fees
If you are 16-18 you won’t have to pay course fees so long as you are a Home Student. If you are 19+ you have to pay course fees. If you get a Means Tested benefit, certain non Means Tested benefits, unwaged or are on a low income you might still get all or some of your fees paid. If you are studying for your first full level 2 or are aged 19 to 24 and studying for your first full level 3 you might also get all fees paid. Further Education Residential Support Scheme
This Scheme is for students who need to live away from home in order to study because their course is not available within reasonable daily travelling distance of home. It is available for students aged 16 and over who are on a full-time course funded by the Learning and Skills Council at Level 2 or Level 3.
 
Learner Support Fund
This Fund is available to most students enrolled on a course of study at the College, although there are a few exceptions. The purpose of the Fund is to help you if you are in receipt of a means tested benefit or a low income and experiencing financial difficulties. The Fund can help you with course related costs for things such as books, equipment, childcare, travel, educational visits within the UK and so on. Contact Student Services for an application form.
 
New Deal
New Deal is a government programme that aims to give unemployed people the help and support needed to get in to work. There are various types of New Deal, not all of which can be done through the College.
 
Travel
If you are a student aged 19 or over, you can apply to the College’s Travel Support Fund for assistance. All application are means tested. If you are aged 16 to 18 you may, in certain circumstances, be able to apply to the Fund. See our Travel Fund leaflet below for further details. Again, applications are means tested and we will take into account whether or not you receive EMA/ALG when deciding whether we can help you.
If you are a full time student aged 16 to 18 you may also be eligible for assistance from Lincolnshire County Council with Home To College Transport costs.
Nottinghamshire County Council also offer help to full time students aged 16 to 18. You can get more details from the following link Post 16 Travel Assistance For Students
If you are aged 16 to 18, living more than 3 miles from the College and have either been refused support by your Local Authority or only offered partial support you may be able to receive assistance from our Assisted Travel Fund. This is new for Academic Year 2008/09. Please note that this Fund is cash limited and operates on a strict first come first served basis. See below for a leaflet on the the Assisted Travel Fund and an application form if you think you may be eligible.
