What is a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma?

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is a full-time vocational qualification that is equivalent to 3 A-levels.  The programme is designed to enable students to gain both academic and practical experience and become competent in areas that are directly related to the workplace.

This course allows you to develop skills in a sport science environment, and apply key analysis within practical sport performance.

The course provides progression opportunities into vocationally relevant employment or higher education, including a guaranteed place scheme for HE sport options within the department.

Who is the course for?

  • For those with a strong interest in sport science and an interest in developing athletes ability through analysis and research studies
  • For students who wish to develop a career in Sport Science (Psychologist, Biomechanist, Nutritionist and Kinaesiologist), Sports Therapy and Physiotherapy

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements: 
  • Five GCSE's at grade A* to C, including a GCSE in Science and two from GCSE English Language, Mathematics and P.E.
  • Satisfactory reference regarding attendance, attutude to study and potential for development
  • Evidence of sustained interest and motivation in the proposed area of study

Progression & Assessment

Assessment and Progression: 

The styles of assessment area real strength of the programme, with the emphasis on coursework rather than exams, allowing students to achieve their full potential.  There are a diverse range of methods used including written assignments, group work, laboratory reports, presentations, practical tests and simulations.

Grades are awarded on a Pass, Merit or Distinction basis.

Progression:

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science provides a natural route into higher education for courses such as Foundation Degrees and Honours Degrees in sport science related disciplines or physiotherapy related careers. This progression will inevitably depend on your performance, the course allows you to obtain 420 UCAS points (equivalent to 3 A*s at A Level).  The skills learnt on the course can also be transferred for other careers such as the uniformed services.

 All students are designated a Person Tutor who has the responsibility of supporting learning and working monitoring progress through weekly group or individual tutorials.  The Personal Tutor will set achievement goals with the students and feedback reglarly to the individual on progress toward meeting these whilst also providing information to their parents/guardians via reports and consultation evenings.

If you are a student aged 16 -18 years old there will be NO fees to pay. Once you have started an individual qualification you will not be liable for fees even if you turn 19 before the end.
