Course Description
Aim
The programme has been developed for those who are intending to follow a career in either electrical or electronic engineering but wish to follow an alternative route to that of A Levels and sixth form. The programme is vocationally orientated towards engineering and is aimed at those who have made this career choice. Although largely academic the units of study contain significant practical elements. The Extended Diploma is considered equivalent to three A Levels for entry to an appropriate higher education programme.
Content
The programme consists of associated subjects, or units, all of the same duration. A total of 17 units are required to gain the Extended Diploma. During the course, a range of subjects are covered that introduce many aspects of Electrical/Electronic technology. These are complemented with other subjects to provide a sound basis for the needs of an Electrical or Electronic engineer. Functional skills in Mathematics and English are also an integral part of the programme.
All assessment tasks set during the first six weeks of year 1 must be completed successfully and on time to ensure progression to the remainder of the programme.
Please see the course leaflet for exact unit details.
Entry Requirements
Candidates will require a minimum of five GCSE’s or equivalent at grade C or above to include Mathematics, Sciences and an English subject (please note that GCSE Science will only be accepted if accompanied by GCSE Additional Science). Other subjects may be accepted by negotiation. Any other qualification or experience will need to be discussed with the Tutor. All applicants are required to pass a skills test and are screened for their ability in Maths and English.
Progression & Assessment
The programme will be delivered using a variety of teaching methods. The programme includes academic study supported by a wide range of practical activities.
The assessment of a candidate's progress in each unit will be judged on the results of assignments and/or phase tests. Progress is recorded in an online environment supported by regular individual tutorials.
Progression
Successful completion of this programme will enable you to apply for a place on an appropriate Higher Education programme either at BTEC Higher National level or at Degree level. The Extended Diploma may also be used as the technical certificate within an appropriate apprenticeship framework.
Duration & Location
The programme involves two years of study each consisting a 36 week academic year. Attendance at college for scheduled lessons is full time with the expectation that all lessons will be attended. Occasionally it is necessary to supplement the scheduled time with private study and there are study areas with IT facilities available in college.
Fees
If you are under 19 on 31st August when your programme begins and study more than 12½ hours per week, you will be entitled to free tuition and no examination fees wherever you live provided you are a European Community National.
