Course Description

Course Description:

Why study this subject?

This one year course offers the opportunity to gain the nationally recognised qualification of GCSE Mathematics. The course is suitable for mature students wanting to study mathematics at this level and who need this specific qualification to progress onto their chosen career. The standard GCSE Mathematics course studied in school is usually covered over at least two years, with 4 – 5 hours of teaching per week; this course covers the same topics in a fraction of that time and so the pace of the work is necessarily high.

Where can this subject lead me?

Students completing GCSE Mathematics at Grade B and above can progress to the traditional AS and A Level Mathematics. Students completing GCSE Maths at Grade C and above can progress to the new AS and A Level Use of Mathematics.

Course Content

In all the centres there is a three module programme assessed by written exam.

The first exam is in November with subsequent exams in March and June.

Topic areas include:

• Handling Data
• Number and Algebra
• Using and Applying Mathematics
• Shape, space and measure

The classes are set up to teach the GCSE Foundation Mathematics course. Working towards the higher tier requires a significant amount of extra study by students, towards the topics only on the higher tier, in addition to the foundation tier topics studied in class.
The extra material that is needed for the higher course has to be done in your own time.  The lecturer will give you help on what topics you need to study and advise you on where to find the material. Depending on the class and time available the lecturer may be able to help if you are having problems with the additional work.

If you already have a grade C in Mathematics and wish to achieve a higher grade we have a seperate Higher Tier GCSE class which fastracks through the syllabus to concentrate on the additional (higher tier only) topics. Please see the seperate course information for this.

Teaching and Learning Styles

Various styles of delivery will be used including formal teaching, group work and individual learning. The style will vary from topic to topic. Mathematics practise in class and through homework will be essential to help you to develop your skills.

Level:
2
Course Type:
Part Time

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements:

Although there are no formal entry requirements for this course, students should be able to demonstrate a mathematical ability suitable for undertaking this level of qualification and working at the required pace.

The first class of the course is an induction session including a short numeracy assessment

Progression & Assessment

Assessment and Progression:

This programme is examined at two levels – Foundation and Higher. At each level only a small selection of grades are available and so careful selection of the level at which you are to be assessed is required

This decision is not made prior to starting the course but will be decided during your course study in agreement with your tutor.

The course is designed to give you the best opportunity for success. However, equal responsibility lies with you the student. Work towards the higher tier requires significant work by students in addition to the work in class.
You will be expected to

1. Attend all classes from the start of the September term.
2. Complete all work set. This will require you to complete work outside the scheduled class times.
