Course Description

Course Description: 

An apprenticeship is a form of vocational training enabling people to earn while they learn the skills necessary to succeed in their chosen career. It consists of 5 Elements: Functional/Key Skills, Employment Responsibilities and Rights, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, Knowledge Element and a Competence Element.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements: 

There is no minimum level of qualification to entry. However the candidate must be able to demonstrate the potential to achieve the requirements of the Framework. There is the necessity to pass an entrance test which comprises of online assessments for Literacy & Numeracy a handwriting exercise and a timed short answer test paper. In addition, candidates should be working a minimum of 16 hours per week.

Progression & Assessment

Assessment and Progression: 

The Knowledge Element provides taught input on Welding and Fabrication Practices and therefore provides candidates with a good understanding of how to perform their job role effectively. This is then assessed via both practical and theory tests, the theory tests are multi choice.

The Competence Element of the Apprenticeship is assessed via a portfolio of evidence which is built by the candidate to demonstrate knowledge, performance and understanding of their job role. A variety of assessment methods are used, including direct observation; asking questions; examination of work products; witness statements; accreditation of prior learning/experience; reflective accounts; simulation, professional discussion, assignments or written tests.

The Functional / Key Skills element of the qualification comprises written and verbal communications together with numeracy skills. These are assessed via a portfolio and on line tests. Candidates also complete a logbook for Employment Responsibilities and Rights and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.
 

Successful completion of the Apprenticeship programme will provide the best possible preparation to achieving trained operator/ semi-skilled status within the industry. It may also, where appropriate provide progression onto the Advanced Apprenticeship programme and the skills required to work as a skilled craftsperson or attain technician level status within the industry sector.

Duration: 

The duration of an Apprenticeship can vary depending on individual needs, but candidates should aim to complete within 21 months.

Fees: 

The Skills Funding Agency currently meets college fees for learners aged 16 to18, learners aged over 19 the employer will have to pay a nominal contribution of £300 a year.
