Course Description
English Literature allows students to study a range of important literary texts, building on knowledge and skills acquired at GCSE. The different genres of novel, poetry and drama will be studied, encouraging students to develop as informed independent readers and critics of literary texts. There is some scope for a creative response to a specific text within the coursework.
Course Content:
In the first year you will study two modules:
Aspects of Narrative and Dramatic Genres - The authors studied will include Jane Austen, Mark Haddon, S. T Coleridge, Thomas Hardy, Tennessee Williams and Shakespeare.
In the second year you will study two further modules:
Gothic Literature (Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights and Doctor Faustus) and produce coursework under the heading of Further and Independent reading.
Teaching and Learning Styles:
Exchanging ideas is an essential element of the study of English Literature. Classes make use of a range of interactive approaches including whole group discussions, small group activities and individual feedback on research tasks. Study of the texts is supported by specially prepared booklets and relevant audio/DVD material
Entry Requirements
Students wishing to study AS/A Level English Literature must have 5 GCSEs at grade C and above including C in English Language and C in English Literature.
Progression & Assessment
Assessment and Examinations:
At both AS and A2 level there is one written paper (2 hours) and a coursework folder containing two pieces of work.
Written assignments are set and marked regularly in preparation for the exam. Coursework pieces are carefully supervised and students are offered individual advice on the drafting process.

English Literature is a well-regarded subject which allows for the development of transferable skills, including the ability to communicate clearly, analyse incisively and argue a point, both orally and in writing. Potential careers could include: teaching; journalism and other media-related jobs; work in personnel and the law.
Duration & Location
One year for AS Level; a further one year for A2.
Mode of attendance:
AS Level 4.5 hours per week, in three sessions, over 1 year.
Advanced Level 4.5 hours per week, in three sessions, over 1 year.

Fees
If you are under 19 on 31 August when your programme begins and are full-time, you will be entitled to free tuition and no examination fees wherever you live provided you are a European Community National. Mature students may well qualify for free tuition and no examination fees; please ask Guidance Services for details.
