Course Description
The Piano School is the UK centre of excellence for piano tuning, restoration and repair, designed for those who wish to work in the piano industry as a tuner or technician.
This level 2 course introduces skills, techniques and understanding and leads to progression onto a level 3 course that will enable students to work to commercial standards of quality and time.
On the level 2 course students will gain practical experience in everything from minor maintenance to full restoration, from design to construction, from woodworking to French polishing. The course centres on four main elements: piano tuning, chipping up, repairs to the mechanism including replacing felts, case repair and French polishing. Other aspects include 'Materials and their Application', the 'History and Development of the Piano', 'Woodworking for Instrument Makers' and 'Health and Safety'.
Students keep a written record that documents all the stages of their work.
Entry Requirements
Places at level 2 are only available to UK and EU residents. Entry is based on a successful interview. These are held in the Spring and Summer terms each year. Progression & Assessment
Practical work is reviewed and assessed regularly. Successful completion of the course provides entry to the Advanced course.
Duration & Location
The level 2 course is 1 year of full time study. Timetables run over 3 days per week to accommodate students who wish to remain resident further a field or have a job for part of the week.
The course is based on the main Newark college campus. We pass on lists of local accommodation agencies at interview.
Fees
The course fees for 2012/13 will be £2000.00 for UK/EU students. This includes tuition, examination fees and materials. These fees are subject to annual review and are expected to increase for next year. Our student services advisors can help assess the level of support available to you.
