Course Description
This internationally known, award winning Violin School offers this course to introduce traditional violin making skills and techniques. By the end of the course the students will have completed one violin. The course equips students with all the knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to progress onto the Foundation course.
The Introductory course includes a study of ;
Hardwoods and softwoods
Use and maintenance of tools
Marking out from plans and data sheets
Template and jig making
Joints used in instrument making
Types and use of adhesives.
Other units include: Woodwork for Instrument Makers, Materials and their Applications, History and Development of the Violin and Health and Safety.
Students keep a written and visual record of their work that documents all the stages of construction. They will also learn to manufacture their own hand tools for violin making and gain a separate tool making qualification for this work.
Entry Requirements
Places at level 2 are only available to UK and EU residents. Applicants should hold a level 1 Cabinet Making qualification or have equivalent woodworking experience. Applicants should be competent users of tools and basic woodworking equipment. Entry is based on a successful interview. Places are awarded on the basis of potential, commitment and aptitude.
Interviews are held in the Spring and Summer terms of each year. The interview day includes a short written and a review of practical skills. Evidence of practical work should be brought to interview. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential for students whose first language is not English.
Progression & Assessment
Practical work is reviewed and assessed regularly. The tool making work leads to an NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations. Successful completion of this course provides entry to Foundation level where more advanced making skills are taught and repair skills are introduced
Duration & Location
The level 2 course is 1 year of full time study. Timetables run approximately over 3 days per week but students are encouraged to use the workshops throughout the week to make the best progress. Students are also expected to continue their work at home during evenings and weekends. The course is based at the Kirk gate site in the centre of Newark, five minutes walk from the main Newark College campus.
