Course Description
National Vocational Qualification awards are available to provide supervisors and managers with an opportunity to gain a relevant qualification at a level appropriate to their work activities.
The competence based route of the qualification allows the individual to demonstrate his/her skills, knowledge and understanding by gathering a portfolio of evidence for assessment.
Content
The School of Business has developed a programme to support the development of individuals undertaking the NVQ in Management awards, and each candidate is assigned an advisor/assessor who will guide them through the duration of the management course.
Students complete a number of mandatory and optional units as follows:
- Level 3 3 Mandatory (14 Credits) plus optional units to credit value 11
- Level 5 5 Mandatory (23 Credits) plus optional units to credit value 15
- Level 7 3 Mandatory (27 Credits) plus optional units to credit value 18
NVQs provide a flexible alternative to classroom based courses. Candidates will compile a portfolio of evidence and will also be observed by their assessor in the workplace. Underpinning knowledge will be measured via questions and answers. Any gaps in such knowledge will need to be filled through additional study. Candidates and employers should be aware that a considerable amount of time is needed in order to compile the portfolio of evidence and candidates will need to be available for regular meetings with their assessor.
Entry Requirements
Level 3 is suitable for First Line Managers or those aspiring to such a position.
Level 5 is suitable for Practising Managers with a degree of responsibility for resources, policy, work and change.
Level 7 is suitable for Senior Managers with high operational responsibilities.
Entry level will be determined via discussion with the course co-ordinator or assessor and will depend on your current job role and experience. A skill scan may be used to assist in the decision making process.
Progression & Assessment
Each unit will be assessed and judged to be competent or referred for additional work and/or evidence by your assessor. A number of units will also undergo a verification process. All units must be passed to gain full certification.
Progression normally depends on the job role of the candidate and his/her ability to obtain evidence at the relevant level.
Duration & Location
NVQs are work based qualifications, requiring each candidate to compile a portfolio of work based evidence under the guidance of a qualified advisor/assessor.
Start dates are throughout the year. Level 3 should take approximately 9 - 12 months to complete, whilst Levels 5 & 7 should take approximately 12 - 18 months. Students who take longer to complete thier qualification will incur additional fees.
