Course Description

Course Description:

The development of a series of academies is a natural extension to the long, successful history we have of delivering sports education to young adults from a wide range of activity backgrounds and abilities.

The academy model is a simple partnership between a National Governing Body, a local club and the College.

The benefits to each partner are clear:

  • As a further education college, our interest is the training of young adults and the association with excellence.
  • National Governing Bodies are concerned with growth in participation of their sport, the training of qualified coaches and the pursuit of excellence.
  • Local clubs are interested in ensuring that young people continue to participate in their sport have left the school system, hence developing a strong adult performance squad.

Crucially. the sport academies allow young adults to develop their playing ability under the regular tuition of professional coaches, whilst also achieving nationally recognised qualifications that allow progression onto university or into employment.

Background to the academies

Students on each academy will train on 3 days per week with experienced coaches and players in preparation for match day on Wednesdays. All Academy players will be supported by a team of sport science specialists to provide psychological, physiological and biomechanical assessment.

Sessions are structured to develop all areas of performance including:

  • Development of individual technique and skills
  • Tactical awareness
  • Physiological testing
  • Resistance training
  • Speed, agility and quickness programmes
  • Performance profiling
  • Video analysis of individuals and team
