Course Description
This programme is ideal if you are a school leaver and wish to pursue a career in the Welding and Fabrication sector.
For school leavers this is a basic level programme designed to offer a practical understanding of welding. It provides the opportunity for you to progress to training at a higher level, or find employment. This qualification can provide the opportunity to develop a practical knowledge and experience to assist in gaining a career in welding/general engineering.
Your qualification may lead to occupations such as: Welder, Fabricator, Plater, General Engineer, Engineering Repair and Construction, Motor vehicle body repair worker, or Armed Services Personnel.
This is a modular programme made up of five units. Practical tasks are carried out so the tutor can assess your competence.
The units you will be studying are shown below:
- 301 – Working safely in an engineering environment
- 302 – Working effectively and efficiently in engineering
- 303 – Using and communicating technical information
- 315 – Using manual metal arc welding equipment
- 316 – Using MIG welding equipment
Entry Requirements
There are no formal academic entry requirements, however you will be required to attend an interview with the course tutor and complete a selection test. This process will decide your suitability for the course.
Progression & Assessment
The units are assessed by practical tests. External Verifiers will visit the college to check the quality of practical assessments.
Progression
On successful completion you may progress to:
- A full apprenticeship programme
- ABC 165 Level 3 Certificate in Welding and Fabrication Practice
- ABC 165 Level 3 Diploma in Welding and Fabrication Practice
Duration & Location
One year for each level
Fees
If you are aged under 19 on 31st August when your programme begins you are entitled to free tuition, provided you are a European Union national. Mature students may, in certain circumstances, also qualify for help toward the cost of fees.
