Course Description

Course Description:

The Woodwind programme hs an internatonal reputation for producing skilled craftspeople, able to repair the whole range of the woodwind family, from Piccolo to Saxophone. Repairs cover the range from basic replacement of pads to complete overhauls involving advanced repair techniques.

All classes take place in one well-appointed workshop with first, second and third-year students working together as a combined group. This creates a pleasant and industrious atmosphere and promotes informal peer discussion and mentoring.

The course includes the making of a complete Boehm system clarinet from basic raw materials. Tuition is on a one-to-one basis in the well-equipped workshop. The course consists of 36 weeks per year divided into three terms. Each week comprises approximately 19 taught hours with access to computers and the library in the learning centre during other periods

Only 8 new students are usually admitted each September to the course.

Progression & Assessment

Assessment and Progression:
Practical work is reviewed and internally-assessed regularly. One unit is externally-tested at each level. Successful completion of the clarinet, the repair schedule and the speed-repair examination leads to the award of the Newark College Woodwind Making and Repair Diploma.  In the trade, the Diploma is recognised internationally

Successful completion of level 2 provides entry to level 3 in year two.

The programme has excellent links with the trade and employment opportunities are regular. Our graduates work for a wide range of instrument manufacturers and repairers or have started their own successful businesses.
