Course Description
This specialist making and repair course develops advanced skills in the craft of making and repairing woodwind instruments. The course equips students with the knowledge and practical skills to enable them to work as professionally employed or self employed makers or repairers.
At level 3 students build on fault-finding and repair techniques. There is an introduction to the replacement of tenons, tone holes and the repair of dents in metal bodied instruments and cracks in wooden bodied instruments. Advanced and speed repair techniques are introduced and the range of instruments for repair includes the Bassoon, Piccolo, Bass Clarinet and Cor Anglais.
This course includes the making of a complete Boem system Clarinet from raw materials. The clarinet making units involve measuring and manufacturing techniques, tool design, turning a Clarinet body, specialist key making, mounting and finishing skills. Students may also have the opportunity to experiment with techniques used in Flute making. Students keep a written record that documents all the stages of their work.
This level 3 course includes the study of acoustics and prepares students for employment or self employment by introducing basic business planning and practices.
Students will learn to manufacture specialist hand tools used in woodwind instrument making and repair. This work leads to a level 2 NVQ qualification in Performing Engineering Operations.
Entry Requirements
Entry is based on successful completion of the level 2 course or having equivalent woodwind making experience. Interviews are held in the Spring and Summer terms each year. Places are awarded on the basis of potential, commitment and aptitude.
Applicants from outside the UK and EU must also have a qualification in English at or above level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages in order to apply for a Tier 4 student visa.
Progression & Assessment
Practical work is reviewed and assessed regularly. A Newark College Woodwind Instrument Making and Repair Diploma can also be achieved at the end of the course to recognise and grade high quality work. The tool making work leads to an NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations
Successful completion of this course prepares students for a range of job opportunities either self-employed or employed by retail shops and manufacturers.
Duration & Location
The level 3 course is 2 years of full time study. Timetables typically run over 3-4 days per week to accommodate students who wish to remain resident further a field or have a job for part of the week. The course is based on the main Newark college campus. We pass on lists of local accommodation agencies at interview.
Fees
The course fees for 2012/13 will be £2000.00 for UK/EU students. This includes tuition, examination fees. These fees are subject to annual review and are expected to increase for next year. Our student services advisors can help assess the level of support available to you.
