Mr J S Allen – Principal & Ex Officio

John Allen has served in Further Education Colleges for over 30 years, the majority of which involved teaching both further and higher education students.
He has been Principal of Lincoln College since 2000, prior to which he served in senior management positions at colleges both in the North West and North East of England.
Mr I Shaw – Chairman

Ian Shaw travelled through the further and higher education college sectors leading to an MSc in Human Resource Development at Nottingham Trent University. Ian is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development and a keen supporter of appropriate professional standards in HR.
An early career experience in design engineering and an apprenticeship with Rolls Royce plc led to a move into the construction sector, initially with Balfour Beatty where he held a variety of training, development and personnel management roles, and then with local employer, Simons Group Ltd. Ian now runs his own Recruitment and HR Consultancy businesses.
Ians personal experience has forged a firm belief in lifelong learning for all and is personally committed to ensuring Lincoln College continues to be at the forefront of this provision.
His wife, Fiona, and children, Jake and Sophie, are central to Ians well being and he enjoys the usual family activities. When time permits he is a keen cyclist, walker, kiter and fell-runner, the latter now as a ‘Vet’ (which now makes him feel quite old), plus anything else generally outdoorsy!
Mr N Main – General Member

Neil Main is the Managing Director of a manufacturing company and joined the Corporation as a Business Member in 2002. His academic and professional experience as a physicist adds considerably to the breadth of corporate knowledge and maintains the focus on local manufacturing and engineering. He is an associate member of the Institute of Physics which is paralleled by a wide range of private interests and skills. He is a Board member of Mercian Matrix, the umbrella organisation that oversees Business Link and business support delivery in Lincolnshire and Rutland; a member of the Association of Industrial Laser Users and a member of the Jobshop Committee. He is also a company member of the Midlands Aerospace Alliance and a core member of the National Finance Committee of CAMRA.
Mrs S Simmonds – General Member

Although she was born in Leeds, Sandra Simmonds has spent most of her life in the Lake District, moving to Lincoln in August 2001. After O levels and A levels in Modern Languages, she took a year to do a secretarial course prior to Liverpool University leading to a BA (Hons) in German. She was then appointed to a junior personnel post in the NHS completing a day release IPM qualifications. She has held a variety of Human Resources posts in the NHS ranging from Personnel Officer to Director; including the transfer of services to a brand new hospital, transfer to Self Governing Trust status and Trust merger. Having spent 7 years as Head of Human Resources with the City of Lincoln Council between 2001 and 2008, during which she completed her MSc in Human Resource Leadership, Sandra returned to the NHS in October 2008 as Deputy Director of Human Resources with the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
She has the skills and knowledge to be able to contribute to the strategic direction of the college, particularly in the area of people management and is personally and professionally committed to lifelong learning and to individual personal development.
Mr J Cawdell – General Member

John Cawdell is a Chartered Accountant and well known local businessman. He is Director of Business & Resources at Trent Valley Academy formed by the merger of 2 local secondary schools and moving to a £35 million new purpose built facility in September 2009.
He is also a non-executive director of ACIS Housing Group. He has had substantial experience both in private practice and the construction industry. He has been Vice Chairman of the Lincolnshire Branch of Institute of Directors, a former Chairman of the Lincoln and South Lincolnshire Society of Chartered Accountants and Past President of The Rotary Club of Lincoln.
He was appointed to the Lincoln College Board in 2004 and is Chairman of the Finance Committee.
Mr A Argyle – General Member

Andrew Argyle was elected to the Board in 2006. Andrew is Chief Executive of a leading set of Barristers, Zenith Chambers in Leeds. He was a Solicitor in private practice for 25 years and brings his legal experience as a Partner in Birmingham and Lincoln firms to the Board. Living in Saxilby, he is married with 4 children. Andrew has held various local posts including being a Director of the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance and is presently a Director of Lincolnshire Youth Mission.
Mr J Barrie – General Member

Jim Barrie was born and educated in Manchester moving to Newark some 30 years ago. He has worked in the Chemical industry for 40 years the majority with the UK chemical company Croda International plc. in their Adhesives Division. During his career he worked in various functions from Technical Development through Technical Sales, Marketing and Acquisitions, travelling extensively worldwide. Appointed Development Director in 1990 with responsibility for all technical operations UK and overseas which involved both recruitment and training.
Now semi retired he is a strong supporter of further education and the creation of opportunities for the young. He joined the board in 2007 having previously been a Governor of Newark College. He is also a Governor of North Kesteven School and a board member of Young Enterprise in Lincoln. Jim is married with 2 children, both in full time education,
His interests include reading, hill walking, travel and real ale (a member of CAMRA).
Mrs E Rossall – General Member

Elaine Rossall is a senior organiser of Home-Start Newark, a charitable voluntary organisation offering friendship and support to parents with children under 5. Elaine has been with the organisation since 1991 first as a volunteer for two years then as an organiser, and for the last 6 years as the senior organiser.
Elaine has extensive experience working with families in the community, and also recruiting and preparing volunteers for their home-visiting work. This led on to a general interest in education in Newark. Elaine has represented the college on the Joint Governing Board of all the 11-18 schools in Newark over the last three years.
Elaine attended Newark college as a student for 6 years on a part time IT course then last year completed her BSL Level 1 which she thoroughly enjoyed. Originally from Stockport she is married with three grown up children and has now lived in Newark for 24 years. In the January 2009 honours list Elaine was awarded an MBE for her work within Home-Start and other areas of the community. The award was presented to her on the 11 June 2009 by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace.
Dr F Mannsaker – General Member

Frances Mannsåker is currently Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Lincoln after a long career in higher education in England and Wales. Her responsibilities are for leadership of the academic affairs of the University and assuring the quality and standards of its degrees.
Born and brought up in Yorkshire, she read English at Nottingham University, after which she moved to India to teach at Bombay University. Extensive travel around India kindled research interests in the literature culture of the British in India, upon which she completed her PhD on her return to England.
Dr Mannsåker has been actively engaged at national level in the quality assurance of higher education since the early 1980s, with the Council for National Academic Awards, the Higher Education Quality Council, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales. She is currently a member of the Police Licensing and Accreditation Board, the Justice Sector Skills Council and the Lincolnshire and Rutland Learning and Skills Council.
She does not like hobbies, but in whatever free time she has, she reads, writes, walks and cooks.
Mrs M Serna – General Member

Margaret Serna has extensive experience in transport and logistics issues and currently provides consultancy services through her own company "Bluedale". Prior to this Margaret had been the Chief Executive of the Lincolnshire Ambulance and Health Transport Service NHS Trust since 2000.
Margaret’s early career was as a microbiologist working in R&D with ICI in the North East and North West of England. This was followed by a period of further study that resulted in her qualification as an accountant and subsequent transfer to the Public Sector, taking up a role with the NHS in Lincolnshire in 1990. Her NHS career included a number of senior roles in Finance and Commissioning. In 1999 Margaret took up a Board role with the Lincolnshire Ambulance Trust and became Chief Executive in March 2000. This marked the first ever appointment of a female to such a role in the NHS. During her time at the Trust, the service strengthened its community focus and pioneered many initiatives that were subsequently adopted nationally. She also chaired and served on a number of National Committees.
Margaret is passionate about the benefits of life long learning and skills development as a driver for change in the delivery of sustainable improvements to local communities. Professionally she has endeavoured to champion accessible educational and workforce development strategies that have promoted the benefits of learning for all. On a personal basis Margaret’s own learning continues as she endeavours to qualify as a Chartered Secretary. She also has two teenage daughters; one in secondary education in the County and the other currently taking a gap year before reading Medicine at Nottingham University. Any spare time presents a much relished opportunity to indulge in the Arts!
Mrs P Mousley – General Member

Perdita Mousley was born in Yorkshire but spent most of her teenage years growing up in Canada. Following her return to the UK she qualified as a Food Technologist and spent several years working in the food industry before embarking on a BSc in Mathematics and a career change into teaching.
Perdita commenced her teaching career in secondary education specialising in maths and has a particular interest in supporting learners with special educational needs. After completing her Masters degree Perdita moved into adult education and currently holds the position of Education Manager within an NHS facility.
Perdita is married with two grown up children. She is a fine weather gardener and has a keen interest in food and nutrition consequently Perdita enjoys cooking particularly creating new dishes. She is a firm believer in life-long learning and spends much of her free time studying.
Mr G Lee – General Member

George Lee is the Director of a Highways sector trade association, based in Gainsborough, a post he has held since 1997. A Scotsman by birth he has lived in England for over 20 years and in Lincolnshire since 2005.
Qualified to post graduate level his professional experience before his current role was in public policy formulation and implementation, in addition to representational work on behalf of the business community. More recently he has become extensively involved in business development, quality assurance, vocational qualifications and specialist apprenticeship programmes all within the specialist highways sector; whilst also implementing delivery programmes for NVQ Levels 2 to 4 and Apprenticeship Schemes.
George has a passionate belief in the power of education to transform peoples’ life chances and to empower them to achieve their ambitions and beyond.
He is a Board Director of Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry and is married with two children who are in primary education. His interests include football, he is a season ticket holder at Sincil Bank, military history and hill walking.
Mr P Doody – General Member

Pat Doody is Director of Commercial Banking for NatWest/Royal Bank of Scotland in Lincoln and Boston. He has worked in the County for the last 18 years and is involved in a number of Economic and Social forums many of which touch Education. He was part of a small group that established Commercial Banking’s National Learning Academy in 2007.
Married with two children he fully supports village activities via membership of various committees including PTA, junior football, Scouts and village hall. Interests include Welsh Rugby, Golf, sport in general and travel.
Mrs H Dytam – Staff Member

Hannah has worked in FE for approximately 13 years, the majority of which has involved teaching Skills for Life and supporting FE and HE students across a range of contexts and settings. Specialising in literacy and dyslexia support, Hannah completed her Masters in Learning and Teaching in 2005 and regularly implements key strategies to support groups of dyslexic adults and adult learners in the community.
Hannah has been involved in co-ordinating and teaching trainee tutors in specialist Literacy and Numeracy qualifications ranging from Level 2 to Level 4. This experience allowed her to have a deeper understanding of the different areas within Lincoln College and other institutions throughout the county.
She also co-ordinates the new Skills for Life Workshop and enjoys organising the annual Skills for Life Celebration Event.
Her hobbies include horse riding and socialising with family and friends.
Mrs C O’Hara – Staff Member

Claire O’Hara was elected to the Board of Corporation as the staff Member (support) in 2006 and currently serves on the Audit and Search Committees.
Born in Germany and brought up in a military family, Claire is well travelled and has chosen to settle in Lincoln.
Claire commenced employment at Lincoln College in January 2005 as Senior Personnel Officer; she previously worked for United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust in a similar role and has experience in a wide range of both operational and strategic personnel initiatives. Claire graduated from the University of Lincoln with a First Class (Hons) Degree in Business in July 2002 and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (MCIPD).
Married with two sons, Claire enjoys spending her free time with her family.
Mr A Monighan – External Member

Alan Monighan has been a co-opted member of the Corporation since October 2000 and after retirement from full membership in 2008, moved to become a lay member of the Audit Committee. In addition, he is an external co-opted member of North Lindsey College’s Audit Committee and is also a non-executive director of two Housing Associations with a combined total of more than 5,000 properties providing family homes and accommodation for persons having special needs and associated support services.
Following service in HM forces throughout the Middle East, he pursued a career in the Transportation and Supply Chain Management Industry. For 20 of those 30 years he was Managing Director of a number of both public and private sector businesses operating nationally and Europe-wide, with up to 7,500 employees and an annual turnover in excess of £50m.
This was followed by 10 years as a Management Consultant providing strategic business planning advice to a wide range of companies, active within a variety of different commercial sectors, in which rapid changes in the economic and competitive climate dictated corporate restructuring, accompanied by fundamental reviews of their current business practices, procedures and processes.
As a consequence of his extensive business experience he has been and is able to make informed contributions to the discussions of the Audit Committee.
His hobbies include learning French – unsuccessfully, ambitious gardening and DIY projects under the expert supervision of his wife, and keeping relatively fit at a local leisure centre.
Mr M Miller – External Member

Malcolm Miller has been an external member of the Audit Committee since January 1993.
His career has included 33 years with the Halifax Building Society, retiring in 1995 as Area Manager Lincoln. During this period he qualified as a Company Secretary.
Since retirement he has used his time and experience to assist a range of charitable and non-profit organisations. He is currently Chairman of the Lincoln Talking Newspaper, a School Governor and a Past President of the Rotary Club of Lincoln.
His hobbies include watching his favourite rugby team, rather belatedly trying to master the computer, gardening for the amateur and attempting to roll back the years at the local leisure club.
Mrs J Bain – External Member

Jeanne Bain has lived in Gainsborough for the past 23 years. She is Chief Executive of LCDP a community development organization that works across the County, having offices in Gainsborough, Grantham and Skegness. The organization has recently bought and refurbished their main office base – the Old Vicarage, Croft Street, Lincoln. Jeanne’s links with the college are strong, both professionally and personally.
Jeanne has two daughters, one in Newcastle and the other in London, and a stepson who lives near York. Her interests are amateur dramatics, walking, travelling and shopping.
Dr R Shore – External Member

Ray Shore moved to Lincolnshire in 1972 and spent the next 25 years working in education, initially as a teacher in the secondary sector. Ray then moved on to work across the whole of Lincolnshire as an advisory teacher. In 1997 he moved into adult education and was instrumental in establishing the Learning Partnership network in Lincolnshire and Rutland before moving on to Lincolnshire County Council as Head of Community Education. Ray retired from this post in 2006 in order to complete his doctorate. As his career demonstrates Ray has a strong personal commitment to lifelong learning as a route to choice and oportunity
