Chinese New Year Celebrations

Emma DeWires, University student and Lincoln College's resident news writer found out what being born in the year of the sheep says about her character !

"Celebrations began on 22nd January for the Chinese New year - this year of the legendry dragon meaning it is an extra special year as the dragon symbolises good luck, long life and wisdom.

I went along to get my name translated into Chinese where the international team were celebrating by giving a little insight into the Chinese culture for all students. As well as name translations they were offering Chinese zodiac information on which year of animal they were born and the characteristics they are supposed to possess.

I spoke to Ka Wing Po, Yang Sun and Qi xiang Shen who said they had celebrated on New Years Eve by having a large meal with friends, as they are not with their families at the moment, having come to study in England. There was soon a large queue of people wanting name translations and even staff joined in not wanting to miss out! I discovered I was born in the year of the sheep and therefore have quiet and calm qualities, though some would say otherwise!
This will be the year 4710 on the Chinese calendar and the festivities will be carrying on for a little longer yet as there is traditional dancing to be done, more time to be spent with families and spectacular fireworks to be seen. "
