If you want to pursue a career in violin making then this is an excellent place to start. This Foundation year is a one year full cost course that will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress onto the BA in Musical Instrument Craft(Violin Making and Repair), preparing you for progression or employment.
You make elements of a violin based on the Stradivari design to develop your skills and techniques in making instruments with the option to work towards the completion of the instrument at your own pace. These include; the use of hardwoods and softwoods, use and maintenance of tools, marking out from plans and data sheets, template and jig making, joints used in instrument making and types and use of adhesives.
Entry requirements
You will need to already hold a Level 1 Cabinet Making qualification or have equivalent woodworking experience. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential. The qualification is not available to learners from outside the UK.You will be required to attend an interview and provide a reference (from an employer or individual who support your applicant).
Assessment & Progression
There is no exam. Coursework is all internally assessed and verified. The qualification is designed to provide access and preparation for the BA Musical Instrument Craft (Violin Making and Repair) course.
