Air & Defence Engineering Level 3

The Air & Defence College is a new concept in education offering real industry job opportunities and input by guest speakers, site visits and projects to start your career in the aerospace sector.

The Air & Defence programme is designed around a full week at college, to include enrichment activities and visits to RAF bases and timetabled periods of fitness in preparation for a role in the defence industry. The programme has been developed for those who are intending to follow a career in aerospace engineering and wish to follow an alternative route to that of A Levels and Sixth Form.

Although the programme is vocationally orientated towards engineering, it will not prevent anyone from selecting other career routes at a later stage. This vocational background also allows entry into the workplace in the mechanical industry, from design and project engineering jobs through to engineering management.

The programme consists of associated subjects, or units, all of the same duration. A total of 9 BTEC units are studied during this year. This will be sufficient to complete the year and leave with a Subsidiary Diploma OR enroll on a 2nd year to complete a further 8 units to make the qualification up to a full Extended Diploma. During the course, a range of subjects are covered that introduce many aspects of mechanical technology.

These are complemented with other subjects to provide a sound basis for the needs of a mechanical aerospace engineer.

You will need to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at a minimum of Grade 4, including English Language, Mathematics and an approved Science-based subject. You will also be required to attend a Welcome Day event (which includes a practical activity and interview) and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report).

Assessment is a combination of practical tests and written examinations.

Successful completion of all elements of the Air & Defence course and meeting the current recruitment criteria of the RAF will facilitate fast-tracking into the Royal Air Force.

Fees listed are for those aged 19 years and over only. Fees are subject to change, concessions may apply. Please note that where stated, fees are for the first year of a course only. Please contact us for information and advice.
