Career-ready programmes

Career-ready Programmes are when you study one of our full-time professional and technical training courses – it’s not just a course, you sign up to a Career-ready Programme.

It’s not just a course...

We work with more than 1,000 companies across the region and we listen hard when they tell us what they are looking for when they hire people – qualifications and certificates are not enough. Employers tell us that they need their staff to be confident and to have solid written and verbal communication skills. They also tell us that, no matter what the job is – you need maths!

That is why we offer you more than just a course.

These additional elements of study are not optional and we expect 100 per cent attendance at lessons and tutorials. We care so much about this because we care about you having a successful career.

Click on the sections below to find out more about each element.

Obviously you’ll be focused on your main studies, but bear in mind, as a college we will be judging you on your success across your whole Career-ready Programme. If you don’t attend your Maths and English lessons we may take the decision not to allow you to complete your core training course.

Our aim is to improve your literacy and numeracy skills while you are with us to make sure you are career ready. This may mean you re-sitting your GCSEs in these subjects to try and get a better grade, or taking a Functional Skills course.

When you apply to do a course with us we’ll send you some online assessments to complete at home. The results of these don’t affect us offering you a place, but they do help us decide the level of maths and English study you do with us.

If you’re struggling to see why you need maths and English, don’t take it from us – listen to some of our local employers explaining why.

Work Experience is really important as it gives an idea of what working life is like in your chosen career. It also shows you why your training is so important and gives you an insight into some of the other skills you might need to work on; like confidence, IT and organising yourself effectively.

You will have to take some responsibility for organising your work experience by contacting local employers – but don’t worry, there’s plenty of support at college to help you do this.

Tutorials are some space and time away from your normal lessons to work on your career-ready skills. You will work with tutors to set targets to aim for, figure out if you need any extra support and get help with organising work experience.

Tutorials also focus on additional skills you might need to succeed and often involve local employers giving guest talks so you can find out more about your career of choice.
