This programme offers education and development to practising or aspiring teachers and trainers in the education, training and skills sector such as further education (FE) colleges, private sector training providers and the criminal justice system (offender learning/prison education).
The programme develops participants’ knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of teaching, assessment and learning, and teachers’ wider professional engagement in the sector. It offers a challenging, supportive and rewarding experience to promote informed, reflective and effective teaching and professional development. There are three tailored pathways for non-graduates to follow, allowing them to specialise in areas relevant to their experience and career aspirations.

Education, training and skills (mathematics): following mathematics specialist route
Learning, teaching and assessment in education and training (all pathways)
Level 5 - Core Modules

Teaching a specialist subject in education and training - ENGLISH

Applications for this course need to be made through the website.
You will study on the Lincoln College Campus for the full duration of the course, using our dedicated teaching and learning facilities and areas, including a dedicated HE study area.
Part Time - 2 Years
Course contact time is 5 hours a week with lessons typically taking place on a Wednesday afternoon between 13:00-18:00h; this usually includes personal tutorial time. It is expected that occasionally students are available and willing to undertake activities outside of these times in order to engage in activities that will support their development and teaching practice, i.e. peer lesson studies, learning walks, maintaining industry connections, group projects, portfolio building etc.
There is also an expectation that students will complete additional independent study and maintain a professional development portfolio outside of their taught hours each week in order to be successful on this programme.
Applicants (all pathways) are required to have the following:
Minimum level 3 qualification in the subject intended to teach.
Maths and English at level 2 (GCSE C/4 or above) or equivalent.
Evidence of at least 100 hours of teaching over the 2 year programme in a recognised education or training setting; no fewer than 50 hours per year.
Appropriate reference and Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check.
An appropriate workplace mentor.
Applicants wishing to undertake either of the specialist pathways (English or Mathematics) will need to demonstrate achievement at level 3 or equivalent in the appropriate specialist subject.
Although not a formal requirement, applicants should also aim to engage in at least 5 days experience of shadowing a professional in an appropriate setting.
Applicants who have not yet attained these qualifications will be considered on an individual basis following an initial assessment. There will be an expectation these qualifications will be gained before completion of the programme.
Professional development portfolio
Academic work will be assessed using a range of assessment strategies; these may include presentations, analytical case studies, essays, academic posters etc.
Observed teaching practice forms part of the assessment in three of the four modules, although a minimum of 8 observations will take place at regular intervals over the 2-year programme. These will be conducted by the course tutor and subject specialist mentor, and students will be expected to engage in reflective practice and coaching dialogue before and after these developmental observations.
A professional development portfolio will be maintained throughout the programme, where reflective accounts, peer observations, personal development plan and evidence of teaching practice will be logged. This will be assessed throughout the course and submitted for final review at the end of the programme.
On successful completion of this programme, graduates will be eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) via the Society for Education and Training (ETF). Graduates will be prepared to teach in the FE & Skills sector. They will be qualified to teach in FE colleges, secondary schools (although only pupils post-14 until QTLS attained), sixth form colleges, academies, training providers, offender learning / prison education, or in the voluntary sector.
Per academic year:
Home and EU Students - £3300.00
Tuition fees will remain unchanged for the duration of a student’s continuous enrolment.
Additional Course Costs:
DBS check - £44 (approx.)
Additional compulsory course costs will be paid for using the Career Degree Bursary. The scheme allows students to access the remainder of the bursary (up to a maximum value of £500 / £250) for additional optional courses, workshops, professional memberships and resources. There is no cash alternative. Students who wish to access opportunities in excess of the Career Degree Bursary may do so at full cost to themselves.
