If you want to pursue a career in the animal and/or horse industry and have limited experience with animals and or horses this is an excellent place to start. This course will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress to the Level 2 Technical Diploma in Animal Care or Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care. It explores both theoretical and practical subjects and you will study the following topics: Being organised; Developing a personal progression plan; Working with others; Researching a topic; as well as specialised units from: Finding out about the land-based sector; Caring for and feeding animals; Moving and accommodating animals; Using workshop tools in a land-based setting; and Using land-based machinery. To become good at what you do, practice is essential, therefore you will participate in daily animal care; horse care; and farm skills such as mucking out, feeding and tidying of the farm. This work will be supervised by the college staff and you will be given advice and help on how to improve your work skills.
You will need to show animal and/or horse handling ability which will be assessed during a taster day. You will be required to attend an interview and taster day on ‘the yard’ and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report) along with evidence of specific and sustained interest and motivation in animals and the animal industry and/or horses and the horse industry; and an ability to cope with a programme of physical activity.
Assessment is a combination of internally-set coursework and practical assessments that might include case studies; role play scenarios; and practical demonstrations.
