MIC Mixed Instrument Making Foundation Level 3

If you want to pursue a career in guitar making, piano tuning or woodwind instrument repair this is an excellent place to start. This Foundation year is a one year full cost course that will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress onto the BA in Musical Instrument Craft (Guitar, Piano and Woodwind pathways) which will prepare you for progression or employment in the trade. You learn elements of piano tuning, woodwind repair techniques or basic guitar making skills to develop your understanding of the skills and techniques needed in making and repairing instruments. These typically include; the use of materials and adhesives, use and maintenance of tools, planning tasks, tuning and maintenance of instruments and developing study skills that will help you build a portfolio ready for application to the BA course.

You will be required to attend an interview and bring any examples of work done to show your interest in the subject and experience of a practical or craft subject. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential. The qualification is not available to learners under 18 or from outside the UK/EU. You should also provide a reference (from an employer or individual who support your applicant).

Assessment is through practical work. Achievement could enable progression onto the BA in Musical Instrument Craft (Guitar, Piano and Woodwind pathways), which will prepare you for progression or employment in the trade.
