The PGDE Education Training and Skills programme offers education and development to practising or aspiring teachers and trainers in the education, training and skills sector such as Further Education (FE) colleges, private sector training providers and the criminal justice system (offender learning / prison education).
The programme develops participants’ knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of teaching, assessment and learning, and teachers’ wider professional engagement in the sector. It offers a challenging, supportive and rewarding experience to promote informed, reflective and effective teaching and professional development.
There are three tailored pathways for graduates to follow, allowing them to specialise in areas relevant to their experience and career aspirations.

- Education, Training and Skills
- Education, Training and Skills (English): following English specialist route
- Education, Training and Skills (Mathematics): following Mathematics specialist route
Typical Course Structure
Year 1 & 2
- Learning, Teaching and Assessment in Education and Training
- Responsive Teaching in the Education and Training Sector
- Curriculum and Professional Engagement in the Education and Training Sector
- Teaching a Specialist Subject in Education and Training
- Teaching a Specialist Subject in Education and Training: English
- Teaching a Specialist Subject in Education and Training: Mathematics
Students will study on the Lincoln College Campus for the full duration of the course, using our dedicated teaching and learning facilities and areas, including a dedicated HE study area. Part-time, two-years. Course contact time is five hours a week with lessons typically taking place on a Wednesday afternoon between 13:00-18:00, this usually includes personal tutorial time.
It is expected that occasionally students are available and willing to undertake activities outside of these times in order to engage in activities that will support their development and teaching practice i.e. peer lesson studies, learning walks, maintaining industry connections, group projects, portfolio building etc.
There is also an expectation that students will complete additional independent study and maintain a professional development portfolio outside of their taught hours each week in order to be successful on this programme.

How to Apply
This course is validated by the Bishop Grosseteste University. The validating institution is responsible for awarding the qualification at the end of the programme. Students on validated courses are OfS registered, funded and taught at Lincoln College and it is the responsibility of the College to manage all aspects of this provision. The validating institution maintains an oversight of the programme throughout the academic year and must be satisfied that students are being taught in line with the required academic standards of the awarding institution. Applicants (all pathways) require:
- Minimum Level 3 qualification in the subject intended to teach
- Bachelor’s Degree / first degree (or equivalent)
- Evidence of at least 100 hours of teaching over the two year programme in a recognised education or training setting; no fewer than 50 hours per year.
- An appropriate workplace mentor
- GCSE English – Grade C/4 or above
- GCSE Maths – Grade C/4 or above
EU and International Applicants
IELTS with an overall score of 6.0 and a minimum of 5.5 in each component. Equivalent English language qualifications are acceptable for applicants not requiring a Tier 4 student visa
Other Entry Requirements
Applicants will need to undertake a DBS criminal record check to study on this programme. This can be paid for using the Career Degree Bursary. Learn more about the DBS Check.
Although not a formal requirement, applicants should also aim to engage in at least five days experience of shadowing a professional in an appropriate setting. Applicants who have not yet attained these qualifications will be considered on an individual basis following an initial assessment. There will be an expectation these qualifications will be gained before completion of the programme.
The assessment methods typically used throughout the programme include:
- Teaching practice
- Professional development portfolio
- Analytical case studies
- Academic posters
Observed teaching practice forms part of the assessment in three of the four modules, although a minimum of eight observations will take place at regular intervals over the two-year programme. These will be conducted by the course tutor and subject specialist mentor, and students will be expected to engage in reflective practice and coaching dialogue before and after these developmental observations. A professional development portfolio will be maintained throughout the programme, where reflective accounts, peer observations, personal development plan and evidence of teaching practice will be logged. This will be assessed throughout the course and submitted for final review at the end of the programme.
On successful completion of this programme, graduates will be eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) via the Society for Education and Training (ETF). Graduates will be prepared to teach in the FE & Skills sector. They will be qualified to teach in FE colleges, secondary schools (typically post-14 provision), sixth form colleges, academies, training providers, offender learning / prison education, or in the voluntary sector.

Tuition fees will remain unchanged for the duration of a student’s continuous enrolment.

Additional compulsory course costs can be paid for using the Career Degree Bursary. The scheme allows students to access the bursary (up to a maximum value of £500 for full-time or £250 part-time students) for additional optional courses, workshops, professional memberships and resources. There is no cash alternative. Students who wish to access opportunities in excess of the Career Degree Bursary may do so at full cost to themselves.
