Travelling to College

We don’t want travel costs to be a barrier stopping you from coming to study with us. That’s why we offer all full-time students support with their transport costs. All you need to do is find out which support fund is most suitable for you so you can get yourself into college each day.

There's plenty of support available from both the College and the Local Authority so please spend some time looking at all the options available to you and working with our Student Services Team to ensure that you get the support you need.

As part of your application process, you need to consider how you are going to get to college, not only thinking about your bus route but also about how you will financially support your travel.

16-18 Local Authority Support

If you are aged 16 to 18 then you have a number of support options that can help you get into college each day.

In order to get support from either the College or your Local Authority then your journey to College must be more than 3 miles to the College site you attend and there will be additional eligibility criteria that you will have to meet.

As a starting point you need to contact your Local Authority to find out what Home-College Transport Support they have and make your application to them, which can be done via their website.

For Lincolnshire visit Lincolnshire County Council’s School and College Transport page.

For Nottinghamshire visit Nottinghamshire County Council’s Post 16 Travel Assistance for Students page.

To ensure Local Authority travel arrangements are in place for the start of term we strongly recommend that you return your application before 31st July.

16-18 College Transport Fund

If you are aged 16 to 18, living more than 3 miles from college, and fit some of our other eligibility criteria then there may be other options to you, even if you have been either been refused support by your Local Authority or only offered partial support.

Options will vary depending on your household income; they could include*:

- A £500 Travel Bursary if you live outside of your Local Authority's Designated Transport Area (DTA) to college, which is paid in instalments.

- A one-off grant of £130.00 towards travel.

- Refund for the cost of your Post-16 Travel Passes (if you have already paid for them and have enrolled on to a course).

- We can pay the cost of your Travel Pass to either Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) or Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) if you are unable to pay for it upfront. Dependent on eligibility criteria.

- If you do not wish to take a LCC Travel Pass out, and you fit our criteria then we will award you £130 per term towards the cost of your travel.

*Please be aware that the above list of support is not exhaustive and does not guarantee that you fit the criteria. Please be aware that the support options available may change depending on funding available at the time.

When should I apply?

You can apply for transport at any time; however, we recommend that you apply before the end of the academic year for the upcoming September.

Please be aware that during the months of August and September, both your Local Authority offices and our Student Services Team are exceptionally busy, so your application could take longer than normal to process.

Applications can be made at Main Reception (Lincoln, Newark or Gainsborough).

19+ Support

If you are a student aged 19 or over, you can apply for the College’s Travel Support Fund* for assistance with getting to and from college.

Applications can be made at Main Reception (Lincoln, Newark or Gainsborough).

*Please note this is a means tested fund and has eligibility criteria.
