Skills for Independence - Lincoln

This is an Entry Level full-time programme which aims to develop a range of skills to promote and support greater independence in day to day living. This course will help individuals with self-confidence, building on their skills and strengths. In this course, learners will complete core units in Skills for Independence including:

• Cookery – basic cooking, using appliances, kitchen hygiene and safety.

• Personal and social development – including household skills, budgeting and road safety.

• Community Access – shopping, use of public transport, working on money skills and developing confidence. For           learners who wish to travel independently, we work closely with Lincolnshire County Council Travel Training           Department.

• English and Maths through Functional Skills – this will be embedded throughout all aspects of the Study           Programme.

• Work Experience – all learners will have the opportunity to take part in some form of work experience and gain a           knowledge of employability skills that may be needed.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, all learners will be expected to attend a satisfactory taster day and interview. There may also be conditions linked to a reference being provided by a previous education establishment and in relation to a learner’s Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP).

Assessment is a combination of observation of practical and personal skills and a written portfolio of evidence.


This course offers learners support with their independence and to build on skills and strengths. This will help learners to progress onto a vocational skills programme in the learner’s choice of career pathway or go onto supported employment
