Adapting your studies is key to achieving during lockdown

May 14 2020

Juggling studying form home and entertaining her two young children is proving a little tricky for Access to HE Teacher Training learner at Lincoln College Emma Bryson, but she says adapting to the situation is key.

Emma says she has always wanted to get into teaching and was pointed to the Access to HE Teacher Training at Lincoln College after making initial enquires.

“I have always wanted to get into teaching and I finally made the move by speaking with Get into Teaching and UCAS and they pointed me in the direction of this course in order to get the required credits for university.”

Emma’s last day at college before the coronavirus restrictions came into force was March 18, and since then it’s been about adapting her lifestyle around the existing changes.

“I have two girls under the age of six, one is being home schooled and the other is away from nursery – she’s about to start school in September.

“I am used to juggling life between college, work and home life, but the added pressure of home schooling and entertaining the girls whilst still attending the online lessons and tasks set, has been a little more tricky. The key is adapting to the situation and trying your best, that's all we can do at the moment.”

Emma plans her study around looking after he children, fitting in time mostly in the evenings, while ensuring she engages with calls from tutors.

“I attend all calls required, which have been set by the tutors, the girls are usually OK playing whilst I attend these - luckily they are recorded so I can refer back if needed.  If I do fit any study in, it’s generally on an evening once the girls have gone to bed, my husband also tries to help where he can but he’s extremely busy with work.  I try where I can, to do around an hour a night, sometimes it’s more if I feel that it’s needed.”

And it’s the deadlines and support from tutors that help with motivation.

“The support received has been invaluable,” says Emma. “Just like us, the tutors are trying their best to keep us learning the content we would have, had we been attending college.  The requirement of finishing the modules have changed to formative assessments but the tasks set are still in line with what we would have been learning if we did the full modules.”

Emma has a conditional and unconditional place at BGU in September, where she hopes to be studying Primary Education with QTS.

Lincoln College is recruiting school leavers and adults to technical training courses, A-levels, apprenticeships and degree courses starting in September.
