Art workshops for schools

August 03 2021

Students from local secondary schools received a masterclass in creative arts at Newark College

Learners from year 10 and 11 at The Suthers School in Fernwood and Priory Belvoir Academy in Bottesford, had a taster of college life as they participated in four creative workshops over two days.

Under the expert guidance of college tutors, all of whom are professionals in their field, the students experimented with printmaking, painting, photography and ceramics.

Fleur Patrick is an art technician at Newark College and helped to deliver the workshops. She said: “The students from both schools were an absolute delight to work with, they engaged fully with everything we asked them to do and they made some really fantastic work.

“During their time with us, the students made cyanotype photographic prints, they made photographs using a pin hole camera, they learned the process of screen printing and made some really interesting 3-colour prints. They explored mark making with paint and produced large abstract paintings and finally they worked with clay to make their own ceramic forms, which will be passed on to them once they’re fired.”

Through the workshops, Newark College aims to showcase their first-rate facilities and equipment to students who are considering their next steps.

Mrs Helen Wroe, who teaches at The Suthers School, said “The two days have provided an invaluable opportunity for our students in making informed decisions about their futures, thank you so much to the creative team.”

The feedback from the learners was very positive, with many commenting that it had been a lot of fun to try out so many art facilities.

Anya Turner, who is in year 10 at The Suthers School, said: “There are a lot of opportunities and possibilities to explore at Newark College.  I have been able to really express myself!”

Fellow classmate, Abygail Shajimon said: “It has been a wonderful experience and has given us a taste of what we want to do in the future.”

Following the success of the event more workshops are due to take place in the Autumn term.
