Backstage Academy visits Lincoln College

January 24 2018

Lincoln College facilitated a tour bus visit for Production Arts & Music students from The Backstage Academy to promote the career opportunities in live events.

The Beat the Street tour bus will be visiting schools and venues up and down the country from Cornwall to Newcastle from 22 January. Students will have the chance to spend some time on the tour bus to gain a glimpse of life on the road, and will also get hands-on and learn about the skills required to safely load-in and load-out of a venue.

Many manufacturers and distributors recognise the need to develop fresh, new professionals to join one of the fastest growing industries in the UK.

Glen Rowe, Managing Director, Backstage Academy and previously a tour manager with Muse said, “We are really excited about getting out to schools and colleges and showing them what a great industry this is. I’ve sustained a career in tour management for over twenty years and am now on the lookout for young talent to take over the reins. There are so many opportunities for people to develop careers in live events we just need to go out there and show them how to do it.”

In a presentation to students at Lincoln College, Glen stressed the importance of people skills in the industry, including learning names of crew and being motivated. Also saying that making it as a musician is hard, extremely hard, and encouraged students to soak up the experience of other roles in a live events career.

Jörg Philipp, Owner and Founder of Beat the Street stated, “I’m very pleased to be able to support this initiative.  Having a job that takes you around the world on one of our buses is a wonderful thing. I hope this tour will inspire more people to consider joining our wonderful industry.”

Stacey Gatheral, Learning and Skills Lead for Performing Arts and Media at Lincoln College said “It’s a brilliant opportunity for the students and for us as a college, not only to be a part of the showcase tour but to show what real-life working experiences are like to those with a Performing Arts career ambition.

“We expect five or six of our students from this year to go to the Backstage Academy to continue their training in the live industry which is really exciting.”

Lincoln College run courses throughout the year, whether you prefer to be centre stage or back stage, with performing arts, dance and technical theatre courses.
