New sitcom 'Newark, Newark' presented students with opportunities to support the production crew in behind-the-scenes roles, as well as starring alongside the star-studded cast as extras.
Media students Andy Elgy and Isobel Hazzledine worked as location marshals during filming. They said the experience had given them a fantastic insight into what it is like to work within the television industry.
Andy said: “I managed to talk to people in the industry and get some pointers. Experience wise, it really helped me find what I enjoyed doing as a whole for film.
“When people tell you stories of working on a set being quite busy, you don't actually realise until you're there how busy it is. Our job was very active, constantly having to be one side of the town then the other.”
Isobel said: “It was a really exciting, I enjoyed focusing on the job and working as a team to control the crowds – I even felt like I was part of the crew!”
Another student, Finn Collin was one of the extras on set, he said: “It was really fun as I’ve never done anything like it before. I’m looking forward to watching it and seeing how all the filming came together and if I’m in it!”
'Newark, Newark' was written by Nathan Foad, a former Newark College student. The comedy stars well-known names including Mathew Horne, Morgana Robinson and Beverly Callard and is loosely based on Foad’s childhood and adolescence in the town.
Penny Taylor, Lead for Education and Training at Newark College, said “Our students have gained fantastic real-life experience working on a bustling and fast-paced television set.
“They showed enthusiasm when engaging with UKTV Gold’s production team and got stuck into a range of tasks from marshalling, selecting locations for filming, attending script read-throughs, working as extras, and even washing and preparing the actors' clothes. It's been a wonderful opportunity for them to learn about various aspects of the industry from some of the biggest names in the business.”
