“I cover all types of Stage Management roles and some event show calling, but I mainly work as a Deputy Stage Manager for Off-West End musicals.” She says.
“My usual day at work will depend on what stage we are at in the process!
“During the rehearsal period I am responsible for liaising between the creative team, performers, and production team. I join all rehearsals to support and manage the cast and directors.
“Then we move into Technical Rehearsals. This is the first time the cast would have worked with the production team and most of the set, staging, costume and prop elements. I will now work closely with the lighting and sound departments, as well as other departments that have cue elements. Each cue will be called by me during the show, so the technical rehearsal is time to practice.
“My role during the show is to call each cue on time, “Standby LX Cue 1 - LX Cue 1 Go”, focus on any problems or issues on stage and complete a show report for each show.”
Daisy is passionate about her career. “I really love this role,” she explains.
“The adrenaline rush from calling a show will never get old! I love the pre-show nerves and working in different theatres and with new people every show, creating a new piece of theatre with them. Hearing the audience applaud is so heart-warming. I feel lucky to have found a career I enjoy!”
She credits her time at Lincoln College for helping her to pursue her ambitions within the industry.
“After studying A-Levels in drama and musical theatre at sixth form, but not knowing where to go afterwards, I joined the Technical Theatre and Production Arts course at Lincoln College to look at more career options in the industry.
“The tutors on this course are fantastic and will work with everyone to find their path. I was able to put my creativity into something new, learn about lighting, sound, set, costume, props as well as my focus on stage and production management. The course is so versatile, giving you the knowledge to go into events, film, TV and theatre.
“When deciding to go into Stage Management as a full-time career, the tutors gave me the support and help I needed. They got me working for professional theatre producers in Lincoln. By the end of my first year at college, I was already a Deputy Stage Manager for shows at The Lincoln Drill Hall and The New Theatre Royal, giving me real, professional work and experience before heading to Drama School and pursuing this career in London.”
After college, Daisy gained a degree in Technical Theatre; Stage Management from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and has so far enjoyed three years in the industry. Her top tips for students wanting to follow in her footsteps are:
“Explore every role, and if you think you want to go into performing, check out how much fun we have backstage too! If you're creative and unsure of what your path could be, you will find something you enjoy on this course!”
