Students on the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) course at Newark College have celebrated the festive season with a party sampling some of the best traditions of their cultures.
The students from Spain, Lithuania, Poland and Romania, are studying to improve their English speaking, listening and writing.
Each student brought in some food that is traditional to their country at this time of year. The event was an opportunity to celebrate each other’s cultures whilst also being a speaking and listening exercise.
Annie Mackenzie, ESOL Lecturer and Course Co-Ordinator at Newark College, said:
“As well as a chance to try some delicious dishes from around the world, this event allows the students to learn about other traditions whilst practicing everyday use of English that will prepare them for their exams.”
Carolina Ortiz, originally from Spain, said:
“This course has helped me a lot. I have lived in England for a year and when I arrived I couldn’t speak any English but over the last year I have learned a lot. My tutor is fantastic and very helpful!”
Malgorzata Romanczuk, originally from Poland, said:
“The ESOL course has helped me with conversations and in my work. I recommend the course; I can now speak lots of English compared to when I started.”
The ESOL course familiarises students with everyday language and gives them an introduction to English culture and traditions. It provides students with a qualification that shows that they have improved reading, writing and speaking skills which will help them in the workplace.
