Hackers Take Over at Lincs Tech Week

May 16 2017

With ransomware ripping through firms across Europe, local firms kicked-off Lincs Tech Week with a cyber-crime immersive experience at Lincoln College.

Organised by the College, Wright Vigar and T&R, the event saw nationally renowned cyber security expert, Stuart Green, of SJG Digital, brief business leaders on how to protect their data.

The event included a range of risk scenarios, highlighting the ease at which criminals can hijack networks, including a demonstration of how the recent NHS attack could have been averted in minutes if the right protection software had been in place

Mr Green said: “Awareness is absolutely key, that’s the underlying, underpinning factor which will help protect any organisation. The more aware they are of the threats that can hit them the more effective their response is going to be.”

Lincoln College Group Head of Marketing and Communications James Newall said: “The timing of the event was perfect and we hope our local business partners left with a greater level of awareness and the contacts they need to start investing in prevention.”

Insurance specialist Leo Marsh briefed attendees on the benefits of cyber insurance at the event.

He said: “Whilst companies can eradicate and mitigate cyber threat, ultimately they are still susceptible to financial loss arising from a cyber event. A cyber policy provides financial redress for that.”

Director at Wright Vigar Chartered Accountants Jack O’Hern said: “Everyone is aware of cyber-crime and the recent ransomware attacks, being the headline news reinforce this point, and yet many people and businesses do not take the necessary steps to protect themselves against the most likely threats, believing it happens to someone else.

Managing Director at Thompson & Richardson Nick Jewitt, said: “Thompson & Richardson are pleased to be involved with this event as it demonstrates our commitment to being at the forefront of modern day insurance requirements”
