Industry placement secures marketing role for Ellie

September 04 2020

Ellie Hocking has been taken on by marketing agency Distract after successfully completing a course within the Business curriculum area at Lincoln College.

She uses the skills and knowledge she gained from the course daily in her role as social advertising executive at the Lincoln-based company.

Her role involves the creation and optimisation of social media advertising campaigns as well as working with the creative team on ad creation and developing eye-catching copy.

It’s a varied role that sees Ellie using her skills in a variety of creative ways.

“I’m getting to know how to use analysis tools like Google Analytics, Facebook and LinkedIn to assess the effectiveness of and to optimise Distract and our clients’ digital marketing,” said Ellie.

“I'm also running multiple TikTok accounts. I’m creating content for us and our clients and will soon be qualified in TikTok Ads after some training.”

Ellie said the course at Lincoln College was perfect for what she needed to pursue a career in marketing.

“The course was a unique opportunity to get a jump start in my marketing career. There were some very credible businesses joining the course, all with incredible opportunity.

“I had met some of the team at Distract two years prior and that’s when I really fell in love with marketing - I had made it my goal to work with them! This course really gave me the opportunity at a new life in a field that I was aspiring to work in.

“The course has really helped me to understand different marketing strategies and elements that go into creating a marketing campaign. As my role is in digital marketing, the Google courses and Facebook courses we completed have been extremely beneficial and allowed me to get a head start at my new role.”

And Ellie’s work and enthusiasm has been praised by Distract’s Head of Ads Tom Jacobs.

“Since Ellie has arrived, I've been so impressed with her desire to learn and progress her skills. She's got a forward-thinking and a proactive attitude you often don't see from someone so early in her career.

“She has a natural talent for identifying opportunities and analysing situations, which are key attributes we look for in new team members. Before arriving, Ellie invested a lot of time studying the platforms she is now working on by using the wealth of online learning content that is available for free on the internet. For anyone that's looking to join an advertising agency, it's hyper-competitive and as a result, we see thousands of applications. By having some of the platform knowledge and skills prior to starting, you will set yourself apart from the crowd.

“Every spare moment she has, Ellie is back online working through the latest learning resources out there, always looking to boost her knowledge. We're excited to see Ellie grow into our next digital marketing expert at Distract.”

Tony Bellis, Industry Placement Coordinator at Lincoln College, said Industry Placements benefited both the learner and employer.

“Industry Placements give a learner, like Ellie, the opportunity to gain at least 315 hours of valuable Work Experience in an environment relevant to their course of study.

“This is spread over one or two years, which means that the student and employer get to know each other whilst the student carries on with their studies. The employer will soon know if the student would be suitable for an apprenticeship or even full-time employment. This route has proved really effective for a number of learners and employers throughout the Lincolnshire and Newark areas.”
