Learners get clued up on current affairs

November 05 2019

Local Councillor engages with students about politics to kick off UK Parliament Week at Newark College

Learners from business, electrical and health and social care courses were invited to debate issues such as climate change, security, trade and Brexit during a session delivered by Councillor James Baggaley. During his talk he encouraged students to take an interest in local politics and consider how they can be more involved within their communities to bring about non-party political change.

James said: “It was brilliant to speak to students about the importance of voting and how they can make a change. It was fantastic to see how engaged they were about issues affecting their future.”

Business students Marta Wojcik and Vilne Zapolskyte said: “The talk was really informative and insightful.

“It was useful to have the opportunity to ask questions about policies that will impact us. James gave some really detailed answers, so it was great to learn more.”

The talk with Councillor Baggaley is part of a number of activities planned by the Lincoln College Group to engage students in politics during UK Parliament Week. The College is also holding a Voter Registration event from 12-2pm on Wednesday 6th November. It is hoped this will encourage learners to register to vote for the upcoming general election.

There’s still time to register to vote for the election on Thursday 12th December. Find out more here.
