Learners lend a hand at national competition

April 30 2019

Sports therapy degree students from Lincoln College provided treatment for competitors taking part in the 41st Association of Colleges (AoC) National Championships at the University of Nottingham over the weekend.

The Championships are a celebration of competitive sports in colleges from across the country. They are also the largest annual student sporting event in the UK, with over 1,500 students taking part.

Learners administered a range of treatments including injury assessment, treatment and advice, cryotherapy and thermotherapy, as well as rehabilitation and activation exercises.

First year sports therapy student Phoebe Taylor said: “For me I think that this weekend has improved my confidence in dealing with different injuries and I now feel much more confident in massaging different parts of the body.

“I still need to work on my confidence with strapping and taping but this weekend has definitely made me a much more confident therapist.”

Third year student Tony Palmer said: “Firstly, I would just like to say.. what a great weekend of sport.

“I was very impressed with the team and how they coped considering how thinly we were spread.

“Our tutor Stu Kelman helped massively with my confidence. His and the rest of the teams faith in me to deliver pushed me and inspired me to get things right on the ground.

“Overall a great weekend, I certainly would like to be involved again.”

Head of Learning and Skills (Sport and Service Sector) at Lincoln College Stuart Reddington said: “For the first time this year, we volunteered our team of undergraduate ports therapists as the official sports therapy team for the event.

“They worked exceptionally hard for three days providing therapy support to all competitors.

“The dedication, commitment and skill levels of all of the students involved, alongside Stewart Kelman (Lincoln College Lead Sports Therapist), was outstanding and we hope to continue our support of the event next year, having received positive feedback from all stakeholders over the weekend.

“Our relationship with AoC Sport goes from strength to strength and the performance of everyone involved at the National Championships over the weekend has only further enhanced that.

“Well done to the Lincoln College Sports Therapy team across three different cohorts.”

Other successes at the event included the College's LD football team who got through to the finals after making their way through the regional qualifiers back in October 2018 to be crowned silver medalists.
