As part of neurodiversity week we are proud to celebrate the fact that three members of staff are now Neurodiversity Champions that have completed the Cognassist masterclass.
The masterclass, designed by Cognassist is an accredited course that will help staff identify people with neurodevelopmental differences like Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia. The platform also identifies ways to support these learners.
The masterclass gives the tools to drive positive change within the college. Adult Education Learning Support Administrator Cathy Martin said: “I took the Neurodiveristy Masterclass because I wanted to deep dive into the foundations of neurodiversity and cognition and see what best practice looked like.”
“I am really pleased to be using Cognassist to support adult learners in finding strategies to scaffold their learning.”
How Cognassist helps students with neurodevelopmental differences
Lincoln College implemented cognassist in 2018 to help identify students with additional needs, it also helps to track and monitor progress made.
Holly a Level 3 Patisserie and Confectionary student was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia when she was younger and later learned that she was on the autistic spectrum. Her tutor Jo Parry introduced the Cognassist assessment, the final report helped holly understand what areas she needs help in to fully reach her potential.
Holly was able to apply the strategies she learned in the monthly Cognassist modules in her professional and personal life with a noticeable impact.
She said: “It might not seem like it will have any benefit at all, but if you immerse yourself and apply what you learn, it will have impactful results.”
Motor Vehicle PCV Assessor Helen Whittaker said: “The course is free to all staff the college, I would recommend the course as the cognition understanding “reasonable adjustments” was identified enabling a different approach to support my learners unlocking the strategies of life learning and study potentials”
Lincoln College Marketing officer said: “I have only just begun the Neurodiversity Masterclass I believe that it is essential to understand each other’s way of thinking. Being Dyslexic myself I have struggled with my reading and writing from an early age. The masterclass will help others to be more understanding in how people with neurological differences work and what support they need to thrive.” -Liam Wallace
