Lincoln College British Values Competition winners visit Westminster

January 26 2018

Continuing Lincoln College Group’s work to promote positive British Values, lucky competition winners received a well-deserved day out visiting the Houses of Parliament, followed by an afternoon reception with The Baroness of Solihull in the House of Lords.

Paul Hayton; from Air and Defence Career College, Quinton Anderson; studying Systems and Principals IT Professionals, and Lauren Lill ICT and Skills for Employment and Further Learning; took part in the completion in November.

Lincoln College have been promoting British Values to students, staff and visitors including democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and respect. Students were invited to enter the competition answering the question “What is democracy?”

Paul, Quinton and Lauren could use mixed media to show what democracy is to them, how young people can participate and why it is important in society.

Winners were chosen for the response and creativity by the Director of Student Services from 19 entries.

Lincoln College Group Director of Marketing and Communications James Newall said: “We are really focused on learning and open debate on British values, which we view as universal values. These students really engaged with our competition, which was focused on democracy and we’re delighted they had the opportunity to Visit the Commons and the House of Lords.

“We have many more events, activities and campaigns like this planned throughout the year aimed at sparking conversation and helping our students to gain a deeper understanding of democracy, individual liberty, tolerance and the rule of law in many contexts.”

The students spoke of their experience of the day with Paul Hayton saying “I really enjoyed the visit as it allowed an opportunity to see such an iconic building in British politics. I would like to add that seeing the Houses of Parliament provided an opportunity to understand the importance of the Fundamental British Values and the role they play in modern Britain.”

Lauran Lill said “I enjoyed looking around the houses of parliament. I was most surprised by how huge it was inside the House of Lords.”.

Quinton Anderson added “As far as the questions go I myself am surprised to say the actual reception in the afternoon was my favourite part as it was like getting a behind scenes of view and how much work is being done to try and improve further education across the country. I personally believe the whole day was a very rewarding and an enriching experience for me.”
