Lincoln College Celebrates Further Education Awards at The Drill

November 24 2022

The ceremony, sponsored by the Lincolnite, recognises student success across the college community. The celebration encompasses just a few of the many inspiring stories here in Lincoln and Newark.

The ceremony, sponsored by the Lincolnite, recognises student success across the college community. The celebration encompasses just a few of the many inspiring stories here in Lincoln and Newark.

The ambition and dedication of learners have been extraordinary - as they have stumbled across many challenges across their academic journey. We are thoroughly impressed by the enthusiasm and continued efforts whilst at college.

Guests enjoyed a three-course Christmas dinner and magnificent performances by the colleges’ Performing Art and Music students.

Lincoln College Principal and CEO, Mark Locking said: “A huge congratulations to all of our student and apprentice winners and thank you to the families and friends who have supported them to succeed.

“What struck me and our guests most was the immense resilience in the face of adversity that our winners have shown, to succeed in their studies, often despite illness, grief and mental health issues.

“There were some truly humbling stories and we are all so proud of the achievements of our students.

“I’d also like to thank all of our employer sponsors and especially Stonebow Media for their support, without you evenings like this wouldn’t be possible.”

Humphrey Maganga, A Level and Access to HE Award winner, is a prime example of a student with perseverance and dedication through personal challenges. He said: “I’ve been here for a year now. I’ve settled in quite well with the help of staff, tutors and fellow students.

“I have partaken in various activities such as open days and helping out in the community, which help me master and improve my communication skills which will enable me to pursue my future career in adult nursing. I am looking forward to improving and learning a lot in college.”

After relocating from Kenya late last year and catching up online after travel and Covid restrictions, Humphrey has transitioned brilliantly to a new country, home, college and job.

Alongside his studies, he works at Achieve Together as a Bank Support Worker in two of their Assisted Living Homes - not only that - he regularly volunteers his time at the college to help at open days to talk to prospective students.

Overcoming personal barriers in education can be very challenging. The progression within our student community is impressive. We are proud to celebrate their achievements.

Darcy Palmer, Phillip Dawson Supported Education Award winner, said: “Sometimes I sit and think about how far I’ve come in myself, my mental health and academically.

“It still doesn’t make sense to me that two years ago I was not able to step out of my own front door, but college has helped me on my journey back.”

Thank you to the sponsors of our awards; Gelder Group, Streets Chartered Accountants, the University of Lincoln, Lincolnshire Police, East Midlands Airports, Siemens Energy, Lindum, Pilgrim Foodservice, Bluedale, GXO, Aura, The Drill, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, ESU, Royal Air Force, The Orders of St John Care Trust, FSB, Home From Home Care and the CIPD.
