Lincoln College marks Royal British Legion Centenary

May 15 2021

Lincoln College marked the centenary of the Royal British Legion with a remembrance service and outdoor British values lesson.

Staff and the college’s Air & Defence students were joined by HM Lord Lieutenant for Lincolnshire and Patron of the RBL Lincolnshire, Toby Dennis, along with Royal British Legion representatives.

Lincoln College Group CEO Gary Headland DL said: “The Royal British Legion is an incredible organisation, which I am proud to support as President in the County of Lincolnshire.

“At Lincoln College, we decided to use the 100th anniversary of the RBL as an opportunity to promote the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith, which is part of our curriculum.

“The selfless sacrifice of some many women and men of the Armed Forces, and their families, is what allows us to enjoy those British Values and frankly I can’t think of a better way to recognise the special anniversary of the RBL than by promoting it to our younger generations.

“We were proud that the Lord-Lieutenant, in his capacity as Her Majesty’s representative in Lincolnshire as well as Patron of the RBL in Lincolnshire, was able to join our act of remembrance and to lay a wreath.”

Chair of Lincoln College Board of Corporation James Pinchbeck said: “This educational session and act of remembrance to mark RBL’s 100th anniversary was hugely important in terms of the significance of the charity’s work to the people of Lincolnshire.

“The act of remembrance for those who have fallen in the defence or our democratic values around the world is as relevant to British values now as it has been at any point in the last 100 years. I felt really privileged to join the Lord-Lieutenant, RBL representatives and our college students in marking this milestone with such a poignant ceremony.”

Mollie Roofe, who is studying ADC Computing Level 3, laid a wreath during the service. She said she felt proud to have taken part.

“I was a little nervous at first, especially being there in front of all those people, but I feel proud to have been chosen to do it on behalf of the Air and Defence College.”

Also present at the event were Mr John Johnson, County Chairman for RBL Lincolnshire; Mr Dave Tyler, County Vice-Chairman and Training Officer for RBL Lincolnshire; Mrs Tina Wood, Youth Officer for RBL Lincolnshire; Mr Alan Canham, County Standard Bearer for RBL Lincolnshire, Trumpeter of the Band of the Royal Air Force College Sgt Matt Cheesebrough and Army Cadet Sergeant Cerys Aplin.
