A Lincoln College University Centre Policing lecturer has published a new book as part of the Professional Policing Curriculum in Practice series.

The text covers the important contemporary topic of policing those who may have poor mental health and are classed as vulnerable or at risk, which runs throughout the policing curriculum.

Brian Williams, Lecturer for the BA (Hons) Professional Policing degree programme at Lincoln College University Centre, has authored the book, titled Policing Mental Health, Vulnerability and Risk, which examines how policing has evolved when dealing with vulnerable people and covers situations such as county lines, modern slavery and online bullying and harassment.

The book emphasises the importance of the overall police response as part of a multi-agency approach and promotes the need for individual professional curiosity from police officers.

Case studies add to the rich knowledge base provided, and critical questions and examples of evidence-based practice are included to embed understanding and help cement theory.

Brian, who has spent 30 years working in two different police forces - gaining considerable experience in a wide variety of policing roles before fulfilling various trainer positions working with student police officers, said: “The book is part of a series to support students who wish to join the police through both new and existing police officer entry routes.

“It provides an overview of situations faced by officers when dealing with vulnerable individuals who are often at increased risk of harm. Primarily, it underpins a module of the same name on the Level 6 programme of the Professional Policing Degree.

“While I never planned to write a book, it has been a valuable personal experience and I hope it will support both current and new recruits into policing roles and anyone else interested in protecting vulnerable individuals and groups.”

Students studying the text will develop their critical thinking abilities and gain the confidence to recognise and deal with the complex issues associated with this topic.
