The second year students studying BTEC Extended Diploma in Mechanical, Manufacturing and Motorsport Engineering successfully converted the petrol moto-cross bike to electric.
George Stamp, Brandon Walters and Nick Leadley handed in their end of year project collectively which will go a long way towards their final assessment.
The engine now runs off a 24v/500w battery which lasts approximately 15 minutes and charges from a household electricity supply.
Gavin Scott, BTEC Level 3 Project Coordinator at Lincoln College said: “Students are encouraged to take into account environmental issues when deciding on projects.
“Electrically propelled vehicles are being introduced by all automotive manufacturers as an antidote to inner city air pollution. Thus this was an ideal project concept to help meet these concerns and to examine and experience the difference in power delivery and energy storage between the old and the new.
“The project challenged both the design and research concept to the mechanical operations needed to successfully complete the motorcycle. Not only does this project meet the criteria for the BTEC Level 3 Project unit, but will provide a valuable and interesting addition to the students' CVs.”
