Christmas comes to College

December 11 2019

Enterprising students from Newark College held a spectacular Christmas Market for members of the public, with stalls full of tasty treats, handmade decorations, crafts and more.

The event was organised by learners on the business course as part of their retail study project. Over the last five weeks they have been working in teams to design, produce and promote festive products, with proceeds from their market sales going to the Newark Foodbank, the local homeless shelter and Cancer Research.

Along the way they have picked up top tips from some of the best in the business, including Steve Grace, the Visual Merchandiser for Paul Smith. He visited the College to share his experience and expertise with the learners, as well as providing feedback on their display plans for the Market.

Tutor Amanda Bradford said: “We set the students a challenge and they’ve risen to it, surprising themselves with what they have achieved and their inner potential.

“They have gained valuable skills including teamwork, event management and working to a budget and I’m pleased to see they have a new self-awareness for what they can accomplish.”

Student Mason Pindar said: “I’ve enjoyed the project and learned a lot, particularly about management skills.

“I found that if you’re encouraging rather than commanding, your team are more likely to pull together to get the job done and on the whole we’ve all worked well together.

“It’s been good to see our products develop and we’ve had lots of positive feedback today.”
