Courses in clinical herbalism are thriving at Lincoln College

Did you know we're the only place you can study clinical herbalism in the UK? One of our tutors Katie Dobiesz BSc PGCHE MNIMH talks to Herbs magazine and The Herb Society about what courses are available, how they can benefit you and our new Masters in Herbal Therapeutics that we'll be introducing very soon...

I am so lucky to be a tutor at Lincoln College and feel inspired and motivated to teach on these wonderful courses running here in Lincoln.

We currently have two courses running: The Introduction to Herbalism, designed primarily for those who need to develop their knowledge and skill foundation for entry into the professional degree programme. This starts in January and is taught over four weekends per year.

The BSc (Hons) Clinical Herbalism is abailable as both a full-time and part-time course and is delivered bybock learning which means that attendance for academic requirements are met through eight full three day weekends per year - plus attendance of the Complementary Medicine Clinic based at Lincoln College for clinical training.

This year we will be starting the MSc in Herbal Therapeutics, a postgraduate course for professionally qualified Medical Herbalists. We have an exciting programme of teaching and learning activities in the pipeline - including a conference next July where all the students and herbal practitioners can meet up and enjoy some inspirational seminars and talks.

Here are a few words from Jane Sanderson, a third year student who graduates this year: “Embarking on my Herbal Medicine degree at Lincoln has been nothing short of life changing.

“I have met and studied with a diverse group of people, from different backgrounds, ages and experience, which has considerably expanded my knowledge.

The course is well structured and led by tutors; all of whom have successful businesses as Herbalists, as well as having a wealth of academic knowledge and experience.  I believe that this is a key to the course’s success as from the first year of study, you not only learn the medicinal properties and chemistry of plants, but also gain an in-depth knowledge as to how you can develop your skills and become an effective herbal practitioner from people who actually work in the industry.

“The contact hours with patients in the clinic is invaluable, as after a three year degree, I had spent 500 hours working in a clinic environment and been able to observe and treat a whole range of conditions.

“I can highly recommend this degree to anyone considering working as an Herbal Practitioner.  It is tough at times; there is a lot to learn – but that is what makes it so fascinating. “
