“I predominantly focus on the Deputy Stage Management side of Theatre, but I also take great interest in special effects makeup,” she says.
“A typical day at university means getting up at 9am for lectures. Then I would usually head over to the library to do some self-motivated work before going over to our unit to sort out costumes and props. I will help set up venue spaces for the Actors shows and help to rig the lights and sounds systems.”
Jazmyne’s favourite part of her course and being a Deputy Stage Manager is the comradery with the team and the accomplishment of seeing a show develop.
“I love walking into a rehearsal space on the first day not knowing anyone or where the show could end up, but within six weeks you’ve made some great friends and you’ve seen a show go from nothing to everything.
Knowing you have been a vital part of that crew and that the show cannot go on without you is an honourable feeling.”
Jazmyne studied Technical Theatre and Production Arts at Lincoln College and is grateful for the hands-on industry experience the course gave her. She says: “College helped me to progress onto university by providing me with the skills necessary to succeed in the industry. I was lucky enough to undertake many opportunities which led to great contacts and real-life experience.
“My tutors always pushed me to try new aspects of theatre to find my niche and an area I thoroughly enjoyed. Once I found this, my lessons were adapted to suit my interests.”
Jazmyne offers the following advice to anyone wanting to progress on to university as she has:
“Do your research and go to as many open days and talk to as many people from that university as possible. Say yes to every opportunity you are presented with because in this industry it is about who you know and having a good name for yourself.
“If there is one thing, I have learnt working in theatre and live events, it's that everything doesn’t always go to plan. You have to be willing to accept that and stay positive and calm to find a solution to get the problem resolved with speed and precision.”
