New IoT building opens to learners

September 30 2021

Lincoln College Group's brand-new, multi-million-pound Institute of Technology (IoT), has opened its doors to learners for the first time following a £4.6m refurbishment project; inclusive of £1.6m state of the art equipment

Located in one of the college’s oldest buildings, the Grade II listed Gibney building, the IoT has been extensively refurbished and forms part of a unique collaboration between the college, University of Lincoln and a number of other Further Education providers across Greater Lincolnshire.

It has been designed to specialise in delivering higher technical education with a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects and will include the study of courses from Level 4 to Level 6, which include Electrical Engineering, Mobile, Web and Visualisation and Streaming services, Computer Automation, Internet of Things and Assistive Technology and hybrid vehicle maintenance courses for Automotive.

Lincoln College has worked alongside employers to ensure the courses provide learners with the industry-relevant skills they will need to overcome some of the key challenges facing the technology industries.

Mark Locking, Managing Director Education and Training at Lincoln College, said:  “Lincoln College's new IoT is delivering state of the art equipment and spaces for outstanding higher technical education delivery, enabling our learners to leave college with the skills, experience and productivity levels employers are looking for.”

The Gibney building is also home to the GLLEP-funded Professional Skills Centre, with state-of-the-art training facilities for areas including health and social care and digital sectors.

The IoT for Lincoln College is part of a broader project with the GLLEP (Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership) around the creation of a professional skills centre in-line with the Local Industry Strategy. The whole purpose of this joint project is to broaden the skills offer in Lincolnshire, to focus on skills shortages, and to grow provision in higher technical skills.
