Newark College's Plumbing Centre has been recognised for its exceptional contribution to the local community by winning the Highly Commended Team of the Year at the prestigious Newark Business Awards 2023. The winners were announced in the ceremony attended by 300 guests at the Lady Eastwood Centre, Newark Showground. The awards, organised by the Advertiser, celebrated the outstanding achievements of businesses in the district.

The journey to the Highly Commended Team of the Year award began when Newark College identified a shortage of skilled plumbers and gas fitters in the local area. They conducted comprehensive research and engaged with local businesses to ascertain the demand for training programmes. With the support of the Newark Towns fund, work began in November 2020 to establish a state-of-the-art facility that would cater to the needs of aspiring plumbers.
The partnership between Newark College and local businesses played a crucial role in the success of the Plumbing Centre. Fifteen different local plumbers and three gas companies collaborated with the college to provide industry insights, work experience, and free equipment to the students. This partnership not only enhanced the students' practical skills but also instilled important work ethics and professional behaviours.
The impact of the Plumbing Centre extends beyond young people entering the industry. Newark College also offers re-training and re-skilling courses for adults interested in pursuing a career as a plumber or gas engineer. The flexibility of these courses, which are provided both during the day and evening, allows individuals to balance their work commitments while upgrading their skills.
