James Ott, a talented student from Lincoln College's Supported Education programme, has found his stride through a transformative work experience at the Old Bakery, a fine dining restaurant and finishing school.

The Old Bakery's commitment to supporting the younger generation allowed James, who is enrolled in the Skills for Independence course, to develop his specialist skills whilst showcasing his enthusiasm, proactive attitude and professionalism. James, as part of the course, embarked on an exciting adventure when he joined the team at the Old Bakery for his work experience placement.

The Supported Education programme at Lincoln College ensures that students receive the necessary support, specialist equipment, and adapted resources. The team of dedicated specialists assess the support needs of learners and facilitates exam concessions and extra time for students with special educational needs, disabilities, or health problems.

Andrew Steward, the Learning and Skills Lead for Supported Education, said: ” James has been a delight to teach on the Skills for Independence course and strives to do his best. He has thoroughly enjoyed every minute of his work placement and become a keen member of the hospitality team – he always looks smart and has a positive attitude.”

Craig Gollin, Head of Commercial Catering, said: “It has been a pleasure to have James join our team at The Old Bakery while he completed his 30 hours of work experience. James' confidence and communication skills have flourished in such a short timeframe.

“We look forward to many more students doing work experience, industry placements or paid employment at The Old Bakery. This project gives students the industry knowledge and support needed for a successful future.”

With a focus on fine dining, James has learned how to deliver impeccable service; demonstrating exceptional aptitude for the intricacies of high-end dining. This hands-on learning experience, combined with the robust support system provided by Lincoln College, has propelled James towards personal and professional growth, instilling in him a deep sense of accomplishment.

By providing work experience opportunities, the Old Bakery allows students like James to acquire real-world skills, build confidence, and form valuable connections within the industry - refining skills under the mentorship of experienced professionals. This collaboration between education and industry serves as a testament to the power of employer-led partnership, in nurturing the younger generation and preparing them for successful futures.
