Access to University (Access to HE)

Lincoln College’s Access to University (also known as Access to Higher Education) Diplomas are designed to support adult learners in their progression to a wide range of degrees. We work closely with higher education institutions, including our own degree provision, to ensure students are equipped with the skills they need for further study. There is no upper age limit so if you have been out of education for a while, or wish to change career direction and need a degree, then this is suitable for you.

Our experienced subject specialists make supporting you in your learning journey a priority.

Each Diploma is designed to fit alongside family and employment commitments so that adults can fully engage and obtain the Level 3 qualification needed to progress to degree level study.  Pathways and subject options support progression to a variety of degrees, from career linked nursing, midwifery and paramedic science to subject specialisms such as English Literature, Psychology and Chemistry.

Our one-year Diplomas had 100% pass rates (2021-2022) and the same UCAS points as 3 A Levels.  The vast majority of students progress to their first-choice degree.  Alumni students stay in touch and express how well their studies at Lincoln College prepared them for degree level studies.  All subjects studied have higher education study skills embedded in the learning, developing academic writing, research skills, referencing, presentation skills and report writing.  Full support in applying to higher education through the UCAS process is provided.

The majority of students apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to pay their tuition fees; this loan is waived on completion of an undergraduate degree for those who have obtained an Access to University/HE Diploma.

Celebrating Student Success - PhD for Lincoln College Access to University Graduate
A Lincoln College Access to University graduate who studied on the Humanities and Arts Access Diploma pathway in 2011-2012, has achieved his PhD. Dr Duncan Foster said: “The thesis was six years in writing, and I am now looking at turning it into a book. After starting as an Access to University student at Lincoln College in 2011, the successful completion of my doctorate marks the end of my student journey (for now!).” Read more on our News page.

What Our Students Say

“I am immensely proud of every one of my fellow English and History Access students who I have seen achieve so much this past year.

“These achievements are reflective of the passion and personality brought to lessons by my tutors, who have made an intense academic year thoroughly engaging, entertaining, and every lesson a pleasure to attend.”

Michael is now studying Classics at the University of Cambridge

Five of these successful midwives started their journey on the Lincoln College Access to Health Practitioners course before progressing to the University of Lincoln’s Midwifery course.

“When I started this course, I was so nervous. I hadn’t studied in over 15 years, had never written an assignments in my life and I doubted my own ability, but I was so lucky to have the support from the tutors and ofcourse, the lovely ladies in the library.

“The course helped me realise how capable I am of learning new things, as well as providing me knowledge which I can use in my future and pass on to others.

“I am now looking forward to being the first member of my family EVER to attend university!”

Kelly is currently studying Nursing at the University of Lincoln in order to become a Registered Adult Nurse.

“From this intensive course, through to my personal circumstances, it has been an incredibly all-absorbing journey whilst exuding sheer determination to achieve my goals.

“My Nan used to say, “It doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down, it’s how many times you get back up that counts.” I have embraced this quote throughout my life, and it just shows, despite lacking academic confidence, what can be accomplished when you channel your mind and soul into something you desperately desire.

“I wholeheartedly thank all my teachers with their teaching techniques, understanding and long-lasting support, as well as my fellow students.”

Elizabeth is currently studying Midwifery at University of Derby

“I hadn’t been in an education setting for 16 years when I started this course, so while it boggled my mind at the beginning, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

“Like a lot of us in the evening group, I’ve had my personal issues this year and I’ve got to thank Pete, Jane, Mary, and my classmates for encouraging me to stick it out.

“Congratulations to everyone graduating and all the best for wherever you end up!”

Joel

“During the pandemic, whilst very lost and confused, I decided to do something outrageous and apply for College.

“I never believed that a year full of distinctions, a place at university and this award could be in my future. Turns out it was the best decision I ever made.”

Rebecca is now studying Forensic Sciences at the University of Lincoln

“Life is busy for everyone and everyone has their own battles, but I feel that whatever has been thrown at me, I’ve tried my very hardest to overcome, along with the incredible support from all the services available at College and obviously the AMAZING lecturers and my fabulous peers who I have made friends with. I’ve come a long way…

“I’ve learnt how I learn, and I’ve learnt how to manage myself… It’s only taken 42 years!!”

Becca is currently studying Biomedical Science at the University of Lincoln

“No matter which path you took, no matter how wrong things went, nothing is final and it’s never too late.

“At 35 years old, I decided to take a punt on myself. I needed to complete my GCSE English which I did here at Lincoln College in the evenings.

“At 36, I started this Access Diploma and when I’m 42 I hope to be leaving university with a Master’s degree. The alternative was to be 42 with no degree. Time marches on regardless. So take a punt on yourself!”

Mikel
