Career Degree Benefits

Smaller Class Sizes

Our classes are smaller which means students can get more one-to-one time with their tutors, as well as engaging debates and conversations with their fellow students.

Condensed Timetables

With our condensed timetables, students may choose to work while studying, look after family or enjoy a better study-life balance.

Most of the time the timetable will be split across a couple of days during the working week.

Career Degree Bursary

The Career Degree bursary was established in order to enhance our Higher Education students’ academic programme and support their studies - helping to make our students more employable, industry prepared and equipped for life as a graduate.

The Career Degree Bursary is made up of two components:

1. A bursary of up to £500 for full-time students and up to £250 for part-time students over the course of their programme to support any aspect of independent study.

2. In addition, course coordinators will be allocated an additional payment to spend each academic year on enhancements that will support the development of employability skills and progression to graduate level employment. Students are encouraged to discuss ideas on how this can be spent with their tutors.

Learn more about this bursary under the Financial Support section.

Employability

Many of our courses have been designed in partnership with businesses, so we know that the skills our students are learning are exactly what they will need to find a job.

All courses have high vocational relevance and links to industry so students can use their learning in real life situations.

Partner Institutions

We work with a number of partner institutions who validate our higher education Career Degrees.

These validated courses have been approved by the applicable university for delivery by Lincoln College, with the final award being issued by the university partner.

Our partners include:

University of Hull

University of Derby

Bishop Grosseteste University

The Open University

Fees, Finance & Support

Fees

Our fees are lower than most universities and with the range of financial support available for our higher education students, we can help our students to achieve their dream careers.

Our full-time course fees for Home students are between £6,500 and £9,250 per academic year. This compares favourably with the amount charged by other universities.

Part-time students are charged a proportion of the full-time fee according to how much they are studying.

International Student fees are listed on the individual course pages.

Tuition Fee Loan

Eligible students studying their first higher education funded course usually don't have to pay tuition fees upfront. Instead, Tuition Fee Loans are available to UK residents.

These are repayable after students graduate or leave their course and earn over a minimum salary.

There's lots more information on Student Finance on the UCAS website or the Government website.

Maintenance Loan for Living Costs

Loans from the government are available for full-time students to assist with their living expenses.  To receive the full Maintenance Loan, when applying applicants will have to give details of their household income (parents' or partner's income plus their own).

The maximum Maintenance Loan for new students starting from 1 September 2023 is:

  • £9,978 if living away from home and studying at a university or college outside of London
  • £8,400 if living at home

This will be repayable after a student graduates or leaves their course and earns above a minimum salary.

Financial Support

Certain students may be eligible for additional financial support from us.

Hardship Fund

Students that find themselves in financial hardship during the academic year can apply to the Hardship Fund, which exists to support the retention of students.

Both full-time and part-time students can apply to the fund. The level of an award is at the discretion of the College and subject to funds available.

For more information email: he@lincolncollege.ac.uk

Disabled Student Allowance (DSA)

The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) can provide additional support to help you in your studies for students with diagnosed conditions.

For more information, please visit the UCAS information page

If you apply for DSA, the College can implement the recommendations within the report. Please give the details below to your tutor and ask for the information to be sent across.

If you would prefer the College not to know that you have applied for DSA, there are options to decline support, and we can discuss what information, if any, you want to share.

If you have any questions about DSA, or the support that may be available to you, please contact Student Services email DSA@lincolncollege.ac.uk

Qualification Guide

We offer a range of Higher Education qualifications at various levels.

Access Courses

Access programmes are established nationally as an alternative to A-Level entry to degree and diploma programmes. They provide entry to a degree or diploma with no previous qualifications and provide grounding in the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully progress to a higher education course. We offer various ‘pathways’ that allow entry onto specific degree courses.

HNC (Higher National Certificate)

An HNC is ideal for anyone who wants an introduction to their chosen subject. Most students who choose to study for an HNC do so part-time over two years while they continue to work. There is the option to do additional modules to progress to an HND, and from there to top up to a full Bachelor's Degree.

HND (Higher National Diploma)

HNDs are available in a wide range of subjects – mainly vocational. HNC/HNDs are well known by employers so this can increase employability. Entry requirements are generally lower than those needed for degrees. A full-time HND will likely take two years but longer if it includes an industrial placement. There is the option to top-up to a full degree with further study, either at Lincoln College or other institutions.

Professional Qualifications

The College offers several qualifications accredited by professional organisations, such as the ILM and AAT. These qualifications are designed with the needs of the profession in mind, and are often the only route into a given profession.

Foundation Degrees (FdSc & FdA)

These two-year degree courses are a cheaper and faster alternative to traditional three-year undergraduate courses. They combine the level of learning offered by a degree programme, with practical, commercial experience. Foundation degrees are particularly popular with employers for a number of reasons: they enhance the knowledge and skills of existing employees; increase productivity and competitiveness; change the skill set of existing employees; develop employees within the business and train new employees to learn their job quicker.

Foundation degrees normally take two years if studied full-time and are a valuable qualification in their own right. They can also be a stepping stone to undergraduate degrees and other studies. Foundation Degrees are awarded in Art (FdA) or Science (FdSc).

Degrees

The title of undergraduate degrees varies depending on the subject studied, from a BA (Bachelor of Arts) to a BSc (Bachelor of Science). Following completion of a first degree, some people progress to a postgraduate degree, either taught for example an MA (Master of Arts) or a research programme, often called a doctorate, and awarded with a PhD or Doctor of Philosophy.

Facilities

Our students have access to a wide range of industry-standard facilities.

Gym, Sports & Salon

All of these facilities are available at heavily discounted student rates.

What Our Students Say

BSc (Hons) Computer Science

Thomas Hughes, graduates in 2023

Why did you choose this degree course and why Lincoln College?

“I chose this degree course mainly because I want to pursue a career in cybersecurity. I had offers from a few other universities but the staff and the quality of learning I would get by having the smaller group sizes at Lincoln College appealed more to me. Since I knew all the tutors beforehand it made the transition from Level 3 to BSc a lot easier to overcome.”

What do you enjoy most about your course?

“I think the small class sizes alongside the friendly tutors enable for a very enjoyable learning environment which I believe is the most enjoyable aspect of the course.”

What advice would you give to someone else looking at studying the same course?

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions as they will become your best friend and time management will become crucial so keep a journal or something to plan your time.”

BA (Hons) Business and Management

Matthew Harrison, graduated in 2022

Why did you choose this course?

“I chose this course as it offered learning opportunities in a range of modules that are relevant in the business environment. It gives an insight into various areas of business and supports my goal of career progression within a job role in the future. I chose to study this course at Lincoln College due to the smaller class sizes and support available.”

What did you enjoy most about your course?

“As marketing has become a keen interest of mine, I enjoyed the marketing and digital marketing modules as this affirmed that this is the path I want to follow post study. I have also enjoyed the collaboration with peers and the different assessment types, taking me out of my comfort zone and developing my personal and academic skills.”

What advice would you give to someone else looking at studying the same course?

“To engage and maintain a professional relationship with tutors and staff as this has benefitted my experience and allowed me to grow in confidence and ability as the course progressed. Also, keeping up to date with current affairs in the business world will allow you to apply the content you learn to real world scenarios. Independent study is also important in developing knowledge and supporting the content delivered in lectures.”

Do you have any further comments about the course or Lincoln College?

“The Covid pandemic has dictated how the course has been delivered but the support and encouragement from tutors and staff has been consistent and valuable throughout. This has enabled my learning to be of a high standard and I have had a positive, enjoyable experience of the course.”

BA (Hons) Commercial Photography and Digital Media

Rowan Campbell, graduated in 2019

Why did you choose this course and why Lincoln College?

“When I first started doing the Level 3 Extended Diploma in photography, I never really had any intentions of doing any further courses. It was after speaking to the tutors I then decided to further my studies.

The course offers so much, the chance to be able to learn new skills and extended the ones you have as well as develop your own style/ area you want to go into with the support of the tutors.”

What did you enjoy most about your course?

“If I’m honest, I loved every second even the times I felt like launching my textbooks out the window! I enjoyed the trips and being able to see new things and learn about the history of photography, read new books and being able to delve into different photographers’ work. I used to love studio days, it was a chance to develop/perfect skills and learn new techniques with the support of your tutor and the rest of the class, it became such a fun lesson, and everyone worked as a team and bounced ideas around to get the perfect final photo.

Everything I learned throughout the lessons gave me what I needed to create my final photos for the last brief of uni. I can also say after I graduated, I went on to be a self-employed photographer.”

BA (Hons) Musical Instrument Craft

Becky Houghton, graduated in 2008

Why did you choose this course?

“I had always wanted to be a violin maker from the age of 13. I asked the maker who I bought my viola from at age 13 what I had to do to become one and he told me that it was “no job for a young lady”! I then continued to get a music degree and went on to have a family because at the time I didn’t think to question him or that he might be wrong. It wasn’t until my husband was passing Newark College one day and picked up the paperwork that I applied. The rest is history!”

What did you enjoy most about your course?

“I instantly felt that the other people who were on the course were just like me. It takes a certain sort of person to study lutherie I think!  The tutors were all fantastic and I loved working with wood.”

What advice would you give to someone else looking at studying the same course?

“Go for it. Put in the hours, learn as much as you can from the tutors and your fellow students and make as many connections as you can.”

Do you have any further comments about the course or Lincoln / Newark College?

“Newark School of Violin Making is a jewel nestled away in the UK’s education system. Its reputation is world renowned and due to the passionate staff and wonderful teaching it must be preserved. I had a wonderful time and I hope it will always be there for subsequent generations of makers and restorers.”
