Students from Lincoln and Newark College, Stamford and Peterborough studying under the Air and Defence College (ADC) and Air and Space Institute (ASI) were welcomed to a formal matriculation ceremony at the reputable International Bomber Command Centre this afternoon.

The rite of passage at such a commendable site echoes the respect and remembrance for those who lost their lives, as the torch is passed on to the future of aviation.

Guest of honour, Group Captain Dave Melmoth BA(Hons) MSc MA MBA MCGI RAF, said “It was a pleasure to see the students at their Matriculation at the International Bomber Command Centre today.  The RAF partnership with the Air and Defence College and Air and Space Institute is going from strength to strength.”

“The facilities on offer at the Colleges are cutting edge, and the specifically designed courses generate plenty of opportunities, giving the students the best chance of a career in the RAF or with defence industry partners.”

Ross Tarnowski, Head of Learning and Skills for Engineering and Technology Air & Defence College, outlined that it was great to return to such an iconic landmark in Lincolnshire - he said:

“The ceremony offers a unique experience to welcome all our learners embarking on their learning journey with us and it is such an exciting occasion.

“The ceremony provides a special opportunity for the learners to be introduced to our key stakeholders and industry support partners, where they will better understand the exciting careers that await them in the aviation and aerospace sectors.

Edward Briggs, studying on the first-year pilot pathway, articulated their excitement about attending the matriculation ceremony, saying; “It will be fun - I'm looking forward to it, [it's] a very prestigious location to have such a ceremony”.

Dedicated and involved in the sector; Edward has also partaken in other events for the Prisoners of War Association at the Bomber Command Centre.

Charlie Blackledge, a first-year Engineering student and passionate about the industry, commented on the opportunity to meet personnel through ASI’s partnership with the RAF, she said:

“I'm nervous but excited about meeting people and getting to know the environment.

“My Grandfather was in the RAF, so I've always wanted to go down the aviation pathway.”

George Annakin, a second-year Pilot Operations student commented about the variety of pathways that have become known since joining the institute, he said:

“It's a brilliant course, it broadens our knowledge on aviation and opens up what other careers are there for us as well.”

The Air and Space Institute offers world-class facilities and allows learners to connect and learn with like-minded people in an innovative environment to underpin career decisions.
