Do you want to learn some handy construction skills? Would you like to work in the building trade? This course could help you.

This is an Entry Level to Level One course, which will help you gain knowledge and skills in four trades including Bricklaying, Carpentry and Painting and Decorating. You will learn to work as part of a team, develop independence, grow in confidence and self-esteem and make a positive contribution to the college as a business.

You will have Individual Learning Plans with goals and targets to achieve the relevant qualifications. All courses include English and Maths and you will follow accredited Functional Skills qualifications, as well as Continuing Personal/Professional Development, tutorials, enrichment and enterprise projects and a work experience placement.

During this course, you’ll learn:

  • Building brick walls and other relevant projects

  • Researching and building small wooden projects using carpentry skills

  • Developing painting and decorating skills ready to use around college and externally

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements needed. However, you should have a desire to progress, a strong interest in Construction and a willingness to learn. Applicants will be expected to attend a Welcome Day, Taster and Interview. A BKSB assessment will be carried out to determine Maths and English levels. In addition, a Support Needs Assessment will also be carried out, to identify any additional needs. Applicants with an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan), will be subject to consultation.

Assessment & Progression

Assessment: Progress is assessed by observation of practical and personal skills and a written portfolio of evidence.

Progression: This course offers you support with your studies and the curriculum is geared to get you to progress your independent living skills and develop yourself in ways which will assist you to make the transition into mainstream studies or supported employment.

What You Will Need To Bring

You’ll need Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) items to assist with your studies which include a polo shirt, work trousers or overalls and steel toe cap boots. You'll also need the following stationery items: A pencil case with black pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, pencil sharpener, A4 folder, A4 lined notepad, A4 punched pockets and file dividers. Please contact Student Services if you require financial assistance to purchase the PPE.
